College of Information Studies (CLIS) - UM Libraries Joint Task Force Update, October 3, 2005

In summer 2005 a Task Force was formed to plan and coordinate the January 2006 integration of the Wasserman Library services and collections into the UM Libraries. The Task Force membership, charge, meeting schedule, minutes, guiding principles, and key documents will be available on the Task Force web site at http://www.lib.umd.edu/groups/clisum/.

Selected key activities of the Task Force since formation:

Getting organized

  • Developed Guidelines and Working Principles for how the groups will accomplish the work
  • Appointed Task Force, and Subcommittees:
    • Services
    • Collections
    • Stacks Shift and Move
  • Established website and email reflector to facilitate communication
  • Created work plan, work schedule with goal of having the integration complete by the end of January 2006

Collections — Completed

  • Developed and distributed guiding principles and a work schedule (9/28/2005 S. Van Sant email)
  • Developed and distributed a list of duplicate current subscriptions/standing orders (9/28/2005 S. Van Sant email) and initiated process to not renew duplicate subscriptions for 2006
  • New monographs arriving this fall will be housed in UM Libraries

Collections — In Process

  • Task Force will make recommendations to CIS regarding Cataloging Collection and other "instructional" materials
  • Reviewing Wasserman holdings to identify unique holdings to transfer
  • Doug McElrath, Marylandia and Rare Books Curator, is assessing Historical Juvenile Collection for possible inclusion in Special Collections

Services

  • Wasserman Library services inventory is being completed
  • Next steps: identify who will be responsible for services and budgets needed

Stacks and Move

  • Juvenile Collections are expected to move to McKeldin 2nd floor in October, with the exact date to be announced later
  • McKeldin Stacks staff are assessing how much shifting is required and staffing needed

Personnel

  • Tim Hackman started working part time in Art/Architecture Libraries and User Education Services for the fall
  • Karen Patterson has started meeting with Social Sciences Team
