Wasserman Library Collection Transfer Guiding Principles
7/7/2005 e-mail from Dean Charles Lowry:
- Until planning is completed we will not know precisely when the collection merger will occur. Given the challenges of moving a collection that is equal to a full year's growth in McKeldin’s holdings, the planning group will have to work on at least two potential dates when such a move may occur-January or June 2006. However, the target date will be January.
- Some weeding of duplicates will take place.
- Some materials will be put in off-site shelving where they are retrievable on a 48 hour basis.
- A few materials may be kept in CLIS for purposes of instruction.
- Most of the Wasserman collection should go to McKeldin and will be interfiled based on the LC classification scheme.
- The Children’s collection may be kept in the Dewey Decimal Classification as a separate collection in McKeldin.
Furthermore:
- The Libraries will not retain duplicate copies of a monograph, whether those copies are on campus or in off-site shelving or some combination of locations, unless significant circulation indicates need.
- The Libraries are “e-only” with a number of serials publishers and for titles that are in Project MUSE, for example (see http://www.lib.umd.edu/CLMD/SERIALS/e-onlypublishers.html for the list of publishers). Subscriptions to print serials that meet our e-only criteria (see http://www.lib.umd.edu/CLMD/e-verpol.html) will be cancelled in exchange for electronic. Generally, these exchanges do not result in a lower-priced subscription.
- Serials subscriptions and monographs purchases are for materials that are publicly-accessible (in McKeldin or any of the branches) only. The Libraries do not route materials to faculty or staff.
- The Libraries do not retain duplicate print copies of back-runs of serials (including annuals).
- Monographs published in 1985 or earlier and that have not circulated in 20 years will be transferred to off-site shelving. Exceptions will be determined on a title by title basis.
- The Libraries do not maintain duplicate subscriptions to serials or standing orders.
- The Libraries have developed some collection policies and statements that will inform the Wasserman Library Collection Transfer: http://www.lib.umd.edu/CLMD/Faculty/colbuildfac.html#policy
- When possible, lost or damaged copies will be substituted (e.g. if McKeldin is missing a volume of an annual that CLIS owns, the CLIS copy will be transferred to McKeldin to fill in the gap).
- As time and staffing permit, portions of the collection may be transferred during the fall (2005) semester, but the move of most of the collection is planned for December 2005 and January 2006. Stakeholders will be notified and the Catalog will be updated.
- In the event that CLIS should decide to keep and hold some library materials or
discrete collections in Hornbake, then the College will be expected to assume exclusive
responsibility for those materials. Information about titles kept in the College will be withdrawn from the online catalog. The UM Libraries will not provide any support in the acquisition, processing, maintenance, preservation, access, or use of such materials.
