CLIS-UM Libraries Joint Task Force

September 30, 2005

Attending: Tanner Wray, Susanna Van Sant, Jane Williams, Carlen Ruschoff, Marilyn White, Karen Patterson, Kamal Chopra, Lisa Wheeler

SVS: Holdings records for the Juvenile Collection have been flipped to McKeldin.
Doug McElrath has looked at historical children’s books, perhaps to relocate some of them later to Rare Books. Prefers late Oct. move – or earlier since flip has happened

MW: On behalf of faculty expressed concern about faculty consultation on principles, including the disposition of duplicates. Circulation may not seem significant, even for books heavily used for courses.

JTF: Agreed that retaining multiple copies of books used for reserve and assigned heavily can be accommodated. Duplicate serials to be withdrawn and dealt with in the following order:

  1. ) Fill in runs in MCK
  2. ) Retention in CLIS public area/s
  3. ) Assignment to Archives & Manuscripts in Hornbake Library.
State regulations require public areas vs. offices – i.e., institutional vs. private ownership.

Annuals moved from Reference in McK circulate, as will annuals moved from CLIS to McK.

KC: A mid-to-late October move of the Juvenile Collection to McK is OK.
Items now in circulation would be returned to McK, then forwarded to CLIS until entire collection moves to McK.
Need to consult Mary Dalto on timing of move.
Juvenile Collection to be out of circulation 2 – 3 days

CR: Will change long name in Aleph to make it clearer where materials are.

KP: Separate e-mail to CLIS faculty to advise on schedule for removal of Juvenile Collection.
Mid-November decisions on items to go to storage

JTF: Barlow said future of Cataloging Collection is TF decision.
If it stays in CLIS, it becomes responsibility of CLIS, to provide space and funds to maintain the collection plus other instructional materials.

STW:
SVS:
KP:Will meet with Dean Preece and Dr. Barlow regarding instructional materials.
KP will send TF e-mail with faculty concerns before she sends to Barlow and Preece. She will include an offer to meet.

JTF: Service sub-committee will meet Oct 4 for 1st time.

LW: Web page for review can be located at:
http://www.lib.umd.edu/groups/clisum/index.html
