CLIS-UM Libraries Joint Task ForceSubcommittee on ServicesMinutes of October 25, 2005 MeetingAttending: Paula Hayes, Diane Barlow (co-chairs), Tanner Wray, Marilyn White,
Jennifer Tate (notetaker), Tim Hackman The committee will meet next on November 8th, 9 AM, in McKeldin 7113. The group worked through the PWL Services Master List and considered each of the services on which decisions have not yet been made. Course Reserves: there is a need to re-publicize procedures for placing materials on reserve. Tim will develop detailed instructions, and will send them out to all faculty and adjuncts in December and January. Copyright Clearance: Currently, CLIS has own account for dealing with copyright clearance, and Wasserman staff handle clearing all materials before they are sent to McKeldin to be placed on reserve. The committee needs a cost and workload estimate per year for this service. Book drop outside of Hornbake Library: Tanner will determine responsibility for emptying this drop. Group Study Rooms: CLIS will assume responsibility for this; availability may be limited depending on the recommendations of the Space committee. Term Paper Distribution: The committee recommends that each professor handle their own classes, and also that they use the stamped envelope approach. The other option would be to leave papers in student boxes on the ground floor of Hornbake. Faculty Publications: CLIS will assume responsibility. Back files are mostly complete at this time, and faculty are depositing new publications. Would require staff time to file the new additions as necessary. A/V reserves: Recommendation is to put faculty’s GAs in charge of loaning class tapes. Cataloging Collection/Cataloger’s Desktop: Will revisit after faculty input has been gathered. Tim will work with Tanner and Marlene Vikor to produce a list of all the materials in the Cataloging Collection, their subscription costs, how much space they take up, where duplicate copies are available, and an estimate of how heavily used each item is. Photocopy Machines: CLIS will make this decision. Public photocopiers are available next door in the other half of Hornbake. IPL: CLIS will assume responsibility. This may close temporarily depending on recommendations of the Space committee. ,p>SDI: It is possible using Ingenta to set up personalized search agents that will find new publications on desired topics. Training or assistance should be made available to faculty to set up these searches. New Title List: This is being implemented in the next version of ALEPH. Tanner will investigate the format and if it is possible to get customized lists of just Library Science related titles. PWL GAs/Hourly Workers: CLIS is working to place the two GAs in new positions. Placement for the hourly graduate and undergraduate student workers may also be possible in the Libraries. Tanner can forward CLIS-provided information about hourly students to UML student supervisors. Task Force Report for 10/30: Tim will update services chart based on today’s discussion. This will form the basis for the committee report. Paula will develop the report. Diane will draft a message to be sent to all CLIS faculty with the services chart as an attachment asking for input. This message should be reviewed by the Task Force before being sent out. |
