Neal Kaske summarized the July meeting since only three members had been present.  The meeting was a debrief of the first “Digital Dateline” lecture given by Jeff Penka titled Evolving Reference Service held July 22, 2003.  85 people attended the lecture; 53 returned the evaluation forms.  The vast majority rated the speaker highly.  Based on audience interest the top two topics for upcoming lectures were “Internet Power Searching” and “Legal Issues in Digital Reference.”

Topic:  Review of First DigRef Lecture

Leader:  Joan

Everyone agreed the lecture was a success.  Cindy Todd  suggested we make sure the taped version of the lecture is made available to all staff.

Topic:  Discussion of Next DigRef Lectures

Leader:  Joan

Joan Stahl has contacted Laura Gordon-Murnane of the Bureau of National Affairs to present the next “Digital Dateline” lecture on October 22nd.  Laura will speak on the Invisible Web.  Joan will check to see if the date can be changed to late October/early November which might be a better time for library staff to attend.   A third lecture possibly featuring Linda Arret on legal aspects of digital reference was discussed.  Joan will contact Linda and discuss possibilities.  Late February/early March was mentioned as a good time for the lecture.

Topic:  Virtual Reference Administrative Duties

Leader:  Neal

This topic was postponed to the next meeting when Julie Arnold can lead the discussion.

Topic:  QuestionPoint Pilot/Dig Ref Committee input on Art/Architecture web form

Leader:  Joan

The QuestionPoint Web template can be adapted for individual libraries.  Joan would like the Digital Reference Committee to be involved in looking at the QuestionPoint pilot in the Art Library and become aware of features of different chat/virtual reference software products.  The Committee will meet on September 24th at 10 AM in the Art Library to review the QuestionPoint Web form.  At the October 1st meeting in the Art Library we will further evaluate the QuestionPoint pilot.
