Diversity Internet Resources

This selective listing of diversity web sites and resources is primarily of interest to librarians and information specialists. Special acknowledgement must be given to the article Internet Resources: Diversity Web sources in higher education: Looking at our rich heritage. in C&RL News, September 2000. The aforementioned article by Mae N. Schreiber, Donald R. Juedes, Elaina Norlin, Gloria Rhodes, and Ethylene Whitmire provided the initial framework for this site.

Affirmative Action/Race Relations Library or Institution-related
  • American Association of University Professors
      This site has links to diversity and affirmative action issues in higher education, including the "Resource Guide to Diversity in Education."

  • American Library Association Office of Diversity.
      The Office of Diversity provides information on the Spectrum program, diversity statistics, leadership institutes, research grants, diversity articles and publications. The Spectrum Program is ALA's national diversity and recruitment effort. The Spectrum site has scholarship information. For information on 2007 ALA's Annual Conference diversity events, please see http://wikis.ala.org/annual2007/index.php/Diversity_Events.

  • Association of Research Libraries (ARL)
      ARL's Diversity Program focuses on "issues surrounding work relationships in libraries, while considering the impact of diversity on library services, interactions with library users, and the development of collections." This site includes information on Career Resources, Minority Recruitment and Leadership Development.

  • Diversity and Services in Academic Libraries: A Selective Current Bibliography
      This is a 1996 listing of printed sources on diversity and services in academic libraries compiled by Toni Olshen of York University Libraries.

  • Job Shadow Day (JSD)
      JSD is an American Library Association initiative to improve recruitment to the library profession. The Web site includes its mission of introducing young people to librarianship.

  • LAMA Diversity Officer's Discussion Group
      The charge of the Library Administration and Management Association [LAMA] is to provide a forum for individuals whose job is to develop and implement diversity training or awareness.

  • Office for Literacy and Outreach Services (OLOS)
      OLOS serves the American Library Association by "supporting and promoting literacy and equity of information access initiatives for traditionally underserved populations through training, information resources, and technical assistance." The OLOS communities include: people with disabilities; gay,lesbian, bisexual and transgendered; incarcerated and exoffenders; older adults; people of color; poor and homeless; rural, native & tribal libraries.

  • Census Bureau Minority Links for Media
      This census site includes links to the latest trends and data on the following groups: African American, Hispanic or Latino, Asian, Pacific Islander, and American Indian.

  • Electronic Resources on Diversity (Santa Clara University)
      Electronic Resources on Diversity has links to information on African Americans, Asian Americans, European Americans, Latinos, Native Americans, and Middle Eastern Americans.

  • The New American Studies Web
      This interdisciplinary information server for American Studies has a subject category, "race and ethnicity" and links to sites including General Studies, African American Resources, Arab American Resources, Asian American Resources, Hispanic American Resources, Native American Studies, South Asian American Resources, Gender and Identity, and Whiteness Studies.

    African Americans and related Web sites

  • AFAS: African American Studies Librarians
      Established as a section within the Association of College and Research Libraries of the American Library Association, " AFAS's mission is to study librarianship and collection development as it progresses and relates to African American Studies collections and to conduct ongoing evaluation and discussion of research in African American Studies." The web site includes publications and resources, the AFAS newsletter, membership and conference information.

  • ASALH: Association for the Study of African American Life and History
      "The mission of the Association for the Study of African American Life and History (ASALH) is to promote, research, preserve, interpret and disseminate information about Black life, history and culture to the global community."

  • Black Caucus of the American Library Association
      The Black Caucus of the ALA promotes the development of library and information services for African Americans and other people of African descent. The site includes its activities, publications, and scholarships.

  • Asian-American Studies
      This site, maintained by Salvador Guerena from University of California, Santa Barbara, offers links to other meta-sites as well as to organizations, schools, journals, and additional resources.

  • Asian-Nation: The Landscape of Asian America
      This site is an "information resource and overview of the historical, demographic, political, and cultural issues that make up today's diverse Asian American community".

  • Asian/Pacific American Librarians Association (APALA)
      The goal of this organization is to "address the needs of Asian/Pacific American Librarians and those who serve the Asian/Pacific communities". Its site includes history and purpose, membership, communications, publications, and APALA Online News.

  • Chinese American Librarians Association (CALA)
      The CALA was formed in 1983. The Association promotes Chinese American Librarianship as well as being "a forum for the discussion of mutual problems and professional concerns among Chinese American librarians." This site includes the CALA E-Journal, CALA listervs, scholarship information and mentorship.

  • Internet Chinese Librarians Club (ICLC)
      Chinese librarians "can discuss issues related to librarianship and information science using cyberspace and computer technology to cultivate scholarship among Chinese librarians and information specialists". This site includes links to Chinese Librarianship: an International Electronic Journal, Critical Review of Library & Information Science Literature: an International Electronic Journal, Library & Information Science Research: an International Scholarly E-Journal, and Internet Chinese Librarians Club Listserv.

  • UCLA Asian American Studies Center
      The purpose of the center is "to enrich the experience of the university and contribute to the understanding of the neglected history, rich cultural heritage, and present position of Asian Americans in our society." It includes accomplishments of Asian American Studies, UCLA's Amerasia Journal, community projects and publications.

  • Hispanic Reading Room
      The Hispanic Reading Room of the Library of Congress serves as the " primary access point for research relating to the geographical areas of the Caribbean, Latin America, and Iberia" and has a link to the Handbook of Latin American Studies, a comprehensive research site.

  • Internet Resources for Latin America
      Molly Molloy of New Mexico State University Library annotates Latin American resources with brief descriptions of the content. She includes "what I consider to the best places to find unique and useful information."

  • Latin American Network Information Center - LANIC.
      This University of Texas site provides links to countries, education, libraries & reference, media & communication, economy, government, humanities, science, and regional resources.

  • REFORMA
      This U.S. association "promotes library and information services to the Latinos and the Spanish-speaking". Reforma is an affiliate of the American Library Association. The site provides information on membership, directory, listing of members, chapters, documents, resources, general news, and scholarships.

  • American Indian Studies
      This site supervised by Professor Troy Johnson is "dedicated to the presentation of unique artwork, photographs, video and sound recordings which accurately reflect the history, culture of the Native American experience in North America, Central America, and Mexico.

  • Index of Native American Resources on the Internet
      A comprehensive index of resources, including culture, history, video/film, books, health, artists, museums, links to tribe sites, activists sites and bibliographies.

  • Native American Sites
      Lisa Mitten's goal is to provide access to the homepages of Native American Nations and organizations. The page is organized by the following categories: Information on Individual Native Nations, Native Organizations and Urban Indian Centers, Tribal Colleges, Native Studies Programs, and Indian Education, Languages, Native Media, Powwows and Festivals, Native Music, and Indians in Military. This site is the home of the American Indian Library Association web page.

  • NativeWeb
      Selected by NEH as one of the top Humanities sites on the Internet, this website "disseminates information from and about indigenous nations, peoples, and organizations around the world". It has links to many resources on indigenous communities worldwide. It includes its mission statement, history, and its subject databases.

  • Middle East Librarians Association - MELA.
      Middle East Librarians Association's purpose is "to facilitate communication among members through meetings and publications; to improve the quality of area librarianship through the development of standards for the profession and education of Middle East library specialists; to compile and disseminate information concerning Middle East libraries and collections." The Association publishes MELA Notes.
