Minutes of the Goodwill Committee
March 25, 2004
McKeldin Library Room 7113

Present: Alla Balannik, Judy Dillon, Johnnie Love, Jim Miller, Deep Sarin, Evelyn Yocco
Absent: Joan Morris (Payroll Day!)
Roles: Facilitator: Judy, Notetaker: Jim

1. Announcements

Judy received Jennifer Evans' very well organized box of Committee minutes, including a CD-ROM of all files. She also reported on the March 17th Organizational Culture and Diversity Assessment focus group interview facilitated by Sue Baughman, where members of the Goodwill Committee had shared the positive feedback we have gotten from staff.

2. Student Assistant Appreciation Week

University of Maryland is celebrating the week of April 4-10. The official date nationally is April 12-16. We will likely send out our appreciation gifts closer to the national dates. Judy got rough prices on Hershey's treats: $6.50 per bag of Kisses at Costco and $1.89 per small bag of Hugs at Walmart. We can revise the "Thanks for Sticking With Us" cards that Jennifer Evans made last year.

Outcome: Judy will send email to staff to get an exact count of students from all supervisors. We expect to have about 200 students, and figure about 45 servings per bag. We will use red decorative cloth cut into small squares, tied with white yarn to attach the cards. We will meet on Thursday April 1 from 2-4 to make the gift bags, and also at a later time if needed.

3. Financial Report
The financial report needs to be part of our March 30, 2004 report to Library Executive Council (LEC). The balance in our account is 1252.66, with a few donations on their way but not received. Evelyn will get the final totals for the March 30 meeting with LEC. We noted several recent flower arrangements and gifts that were sent, including a memorial gift that was very graciously donated back to the committee. We got a request to pay for the cake for the Frank Boches and Ann Masnik retirement party. We agreed we should get the receipt for it and reimburse from Goodwill Committee funds.

4. Revisit Meeting Dates
Thursday meetings have been difficult for several members, so we decided to try 3rd Fridays from 10am-11am.

5. March 30, 2004 report to LEC
Judy, Johnnie, and Evelyn will attend. A major point will be the need for LEC 's active support in recruiting new members of Goodwill Committee. GWC's representation is intended to be one member from each of 7 libraries, plus 1 from each of 5 divisions. If we can start with 4 new members with 2 year terms and 4 with 1 year terms, we can have overlap to keep our work going more effectively.

6. Dividing Jennifer Evans' duties
Judy will do PR and keep the main GWC files. Jim will take minutes and will email Gary Phillips for access to .../groups/goodwill/ subdirectory to maintain our web page.

7. Next meeting: April 16, 2004 10-11am
