Introductions

JLove has gotten a metal cabinet, which is placed outside of her office, to house GWC materials. JLove is going to get a key from facilities for the cabinet.

Committee members serve two years and can use eight hours of work time per month toward committee work.

Reviewed last year's annual report.

Committee needs to send something to one staff member for extended illness and to another staff member for upcoming baby.

Finances
$320.00 balance in account
Currently people are asked to donate $5.00/semester or $10.00/yr
Committee needs a checking account. Previously cash was kept in Mark Wilkerson's safe.
Need better tracking of finances with itemized list of expenses.
In past years each department got an envelope for donations-different strategies were discussed for increasing participation.
each person should get an envelope?
the donation should be free will with a suggested amount?
Should donations remain anonymous?

Point brought up that good will is not given out equitably, and people do not know about the work of the committee.
Lost and Found sells unclaimed books at the end of the year and donates proceeds to GWC.

More discussion is needed to set guidelines for collecting donations and how finances should be tracked and shared with larger community.

Activities
The bake sale, in past years, was more successful than the sale of crafts. Discussion about moving the craft/bake sale to the week before Thanksgiving-perhaps around pay day.

JLove would like to see the committee take on the activity of giving water bottles and certificates to staff at their work anniversaries. Suggestion was made that instead of water bottles maybe people would like gift certificates to campus restaurants better.

Perhaps sell water bottles as a fund raiser.

Decorating eat-in study lounge

No garage sale this year.

Staff luncheon-October 24th
Also United Nations Day
Diversity Committee and GWC collaborate on event
Want to make a point of including students-Johnnie suggested a panel of international students discussing their countries and their experiences adjusting to the UM Libraries.

Need to elect officers-Chair, Vice-Chair, Secretary, Treasurer (who would head the donations effort), and Public Relations

Overall goals: to increase participation in committee, including GA's and undergraduates
to improve work climate in UM Libraries
to distribute "the good will" through a variety of channels and to a broader audience in an equitable manner.

Next meeting: Friday, September 20, 9:30-11:00
