MISSION
To advance the information literacy of UM students and faculty, by contributing to the Libraries' mission of instructing and educating in the use of information resources required for meeting the education, research and service mission of the University.
WORK OF THE TEAM
Stay abreast of developments and trends in information literacy and library instruction.
Develop a framework of the library instruction program as it cuts across all disciplines and special areas.
Review problems and issues, develop solutions, and recommend policies relating to the Libraries' instructional programs.
Support library instruction provided to the University's general and core courses such as Freshman English, Professional Writing, Freshmen Orientation, Honors, and UNIV World Courses. "Support" may mean a variety of approaches to addressing the instructional needs of these programs; it does not imply necessarily teaching the classes. Teaching of general and core classes will continue to be a shared responsibility of many library staff.
Explore alternative delivery mechanisms for local and long-distance instruction, and participate in development of them.
Provide oversight and recommend standards for creating and updating instructional materials, in print and on the Web. (n.b., "instructional materials" are defined as handouts and Web pages that support a specific university course or instructional activity; guides to information resources in topical areas and general guides to the libraries are not classified as instructional materials under the purview of the Information Literacy Team--see reference below to Guides Group).
Plan and support staff development that builds skills in instruction and improves quality of teaching and learning.
Assess and evaluate instruction, analyze evaluation data, and make data-based recommendations for change.
Communicate user education issues to appropriate library staff.
Facilitate instructional visits by outside groups, and special events related to orientation and instruction.
Note: Some projects will involve library staff recruited from outside the Team. Many UM Libraries classes and instructional materials will be created and delivered by librarians who are not members of the Team. Team members will participate in these activities as appropriate, but their main role is to set policies and standards, coordinate activities, and support the work of other library staff engaged in instruction.
As much of the work of the Team is similar in scope to that of the Committee on Library User Education (CLUE), CLUE will cease to exist once the Team is formed. However, the Guides Group, which is responsible for the oversight and quality control for creation and maintenance of all guides to information resources (subject-specific and general), will continue to function.
