UM Libraries Digital Reference Committee Presents
The Future of Reference
When: Wednesday, April 6, 2005; 2:00 to 4:00 PM
Where: McKeldin Library, Special Events Room,
University of Maryland, College Park
On April 6, 2005 librarians from across the area will come together at the University of Maryland to discuss The Future of Reference. A panel of experts will draw from their unique perspectives to address the changing landscape of reference service. Panelists will consider a variety of questions facing reference librarians including:
- How are reference services changing? What is driving the change?
- With more people locating information on their own, via the Web, is there a need for reference services in libraries?
- Communication modes have influenced patron expectations, as well as the design of our services. Which modes of communication will be most popular in the next 5 years: in-person, telephone, e-mail, chat, IM?
- Does the physical Reference Desk have a future?
- What skills are needed by reference librarians now and in the next 5 years?
A question-answer period will follow the presentations by panelists and respondents.
