Assembly ResolutionsResolution No. 1Since learning and educational opportunities are vital for the development of all library staff, learning must become a part of each person’s work, not an add-on, and be incorporated into the management of tasks, routines and responsibilities. Learning can take place through a variety of means that include formal Learning Curriculum workshops, journal article discussions, discussions of specific topics such as the Video Brown Bags, all staff meetings, department or team training, peer training, attendance at professional conferences, academic lectures, course work, and reading professional literature. As staff learn and develop knowledge and skills, the UM Libraries will become a stronger organization. We resolve that the Library Faculty Assembly recommend to the Dean of Libraries and the Library Executive Council that all library staff be permitted to incorporate a minimum of 8 hours per month of learning into his/her performance expectations to be negotiated with the supervisor, manager, team leader or peer review committee and that said individuals be asked to provide encouragement and support for staff to participate in learning opportunities.
