Faculty Activity Report (FAR) Training
In 2004 the University of Maryland College of Engineering instituted a new online reporting system called Faculty Activity Reports, or FAR. That system now applies to all academic units on campus, including the Libraries. Library faculty will need to use this system to report activities undertaken in calendar year 2007, and to comply with the campus Conflict of Interest reporting requirement. In this hands-on session, participants will receive an overview of the online FAR, and will have an opportunity to work on their individual reports. Participants are encouraged to bring citations of any awards received, conference presentations, papers or other publications submitted during 2007 to enter in to their individual FAR during this workshop. This session is now full. To be added to the wait list, e-mail the lib-learning reflector (lib-learning@umd.edu). Please put "FAR Training" in the subject line of your e-mail. What's Special About Special Collections?
If you have ever wondered what goes on in UM Libraries Special Collections units, here is your chance to find out! The Special Collections Orientation and Training Team invites you to tour Hornbake Library to learn first-hand what Special Collections colleagues do and hear from Special Collections curators about the fabulous resources maintained and made accessible there. You will find out about the Maryland Room and Marylandia and Rare Books, the Katherine Anne Porter Room and University Archives, Literary Manuscripts and Historical Manuscripts. You will be introduced to the National Trust Library and the Broadcasting Archives. And you will see Nonprint Media's space and the new home of the Prange Collection. To sign up for the tour, please RSVP to Tom Connors (tconnors@umd.edu, 5-9255) or Laura Cleary (lcleary@umd.edu, 5-9214). To keep things manageable, the number of tour participants will be limited. Please sign up early - first come, first served! New Student Assistant Orientation
In keeping with the University's orientation policy, the Libraries' New Student Assistant Orientation is a required informal information sharing program and serves as a way to provide all new student assistants with a general overview of the UM Libraries. The goal of this session is to equip all new student assistants with information that will ensure their success as a new library employee. All new student assistants are required to participate in a 2.5 hour orientation session within thirty days of their initial employment date. Lisa Warner is now setting up dates as new student assistants are hired. If the dates and times do not work, please see Lisa Warner (5-9245) about rescheduling for a new time. Please contact Johnnie Love (jlove1@umd.edu, 5-9048)for further information. Hiding in Plain Sight: Little Known Collections in the University Libraries
The Serial Set is a collection of more than 330,000 official documents published by the US Government since 1817. Among its holdings are 52,000 maps depicting fundamental aspects of early American life, among them westward expansion, territorial boundaries, war, foreign affairs, urban growth, public health, rivers and harbors, geology and mining, weather, agriculture, and demographics. This presentation will provide an overview of the Serial Set map collection and give users what they need to find the maps in UM's print and digital collections. The event is free and no rsvp is necessary. Future talks are listed on the web at: http://www.lib.umd.edu/CLMD/SpecColl/hidinginplainsight.html. If you have questions or would like more information, please contact Joan Stahl (jstahl@umd.edu) or Michael Fry (mwfry@umd.edu). Office 2007 Overview Workshop
If you thought ribbons were just for packages and tabs were only for file folders - this is the program for you! This hands-on session will give you a brief overview of the Office 2007 environment by way of Word, Excel and PowerPoint, to help you learn what to expect as you transition from using Office 03 programs to Office 07 programs. Find out how Office 07, in many ways, is "exactly the same, just [a little bit] different"! This session is now full. To be added to the wait list, please email lib-learning@umd.edu. Seats are currently available for an additional session of this workshop, scheduled for April 24. For more information regarding Office 2007 programs, visit our Computer Training Handouts Page. Sexual Harassment Prevention Program

Please contact Jenny Kinniff (x4-2677, jkinniff@umd.edu) if you have any questions about your eligibility for this training./p> In this session, you will learn how to recognize and resolve sexual harassment, learn ways a victim of sexual harassment can document incidents of harassment, learn EEOC's definition of quid pro quo and hostile environment harassment, learn about employer liability in harassment cases, and learn about resolution procedures available at UM and the University's sexual harassment prevention policy.
