This hands-on-session will introduce you to the UM Libraries' new course reserves system which will be available beginning Summer 2008. Learn how to request and add reserve items using the new system. New features will also be highlighted, such as how to track your materials through the process and receive email alerts once the items are available. You will also learn how students will access their course materials through ELMS/Blackboard.

These training workshops are intended for Faculty and interested library staff, especially those who work at service desks. For more information on the content of this session, please contact Jamie Edwards (301-405-9181, jamyung@umd.edu) or Sharon Epps (301-405-9177, sepps@umd.edu).

Dr. Thomas is a recipient of the John K. Fairbank Prize, American Historical Association, for best book in East Asian History.

Desktop Driver's Ed

Developed by the Desktop Services Committee, this overview session is designed to help you learn almost everything you ever wanted to know about the tools needed to be a responsible computer user at the University of Maryland Libraries. Computer security measures and the role you play in maintaining your desktop machine will be included in this discussion.

Participants will learn about the UM Libraries’ LAN infrastructure, and the relationship between the University’s Office of Information Technology (OIT) and the Libraries’ Information Technology Division (ITD). There will be a discussion of computer security, including definitions of viruses, worms, and Trojan horses. Participants will also gain an understanding of the University’s recently revised Policy on the Acceptable Use of Information Technology Resources.

It seems like everyone is talking about blogs these days! Even here in the Libraries, many news items and announcements that used to come via email or print newsletters have moved to our growing collection of blogs.

If you're a newcomer to the world of blogs and want to know more about what they are, where to find them on the Libraries' webpages, or how to create your own blog posts or comments, this training is for you! We will focus on blogs created for the Libraries, but the information you learn can also be used to read and post to other kinds of blogs. By the end of this session, participants will:

  • Understand the purpose and basic features of a blog
  • Read, search, and comment on blogs
  • Create and post entries on a blog

Safety and Security Workshop

Sexual Harassment Prevention Program

This workshop is for Library staff who have not participated in the Sexual Harassment Prevention Program training on the UMD campus. This training is required for all staff, including student workers and Graduate Assistants. Updates or refresher classes for staff will be planned at least bi-annually or more frequently as dictated by changed law or policy. Please contact Jenny Kinniff (x4-2677, jkinniff@umd.edu) if you have any questions about your eligibility for this training.

In this session, you will learn how to recognize and resolve sexual harassment, learn ways a victim of sexual harassment can document incidents of harassment, learn EEOC's definition of quid pro quo and hostile environment harassment, learn about employer liability in harassment cases, and learn about resolution procedures available at UM and the University's sexual harassment prevention policy.

Registration for this program is generally limited to 20 staff members.
