New Student Assistant Orientation
In keeping with the University's orientation policy, the Libraries' New Student Orientation is a required informal information sharing program and serves as a way to provide all new student assistants with a general overview of the UM Libraries. The goal of this session is to equip all new student assistants with information that will ensure their success as a new library employee. All new student assistants are required to participate in a 2.5 hour orientation session within thirty days of their initial employment date. Lisa Warner is now setting up dates as new student assistants are hired. If the dates and times do not work, please see Lisa Warner (5-9245) about rescheduling for a new time. Please contact Johnnie Love (jlove1@umd.edu) for further information. Secrets of Meeting Management
Do you cringe every time you hear the words "let’s schedule a meeting to discuss this"? Are your routine meetings long in duration but short in productivity? Are you at a loss for how to determine an appropriate agenda outcome? If any of these sound familiar, we have a solution! Cindy Todd and Maggie Saponaro will be presenting "Secrets of Meeting Management," and will focus on sharing practical techniques to make meetings less arduous and more productive. This program is designed as a clinic to help you make those meetings you attend more effective. You will learn practical techniques of meeting management, as well as advice for how to address those "unexpected" items that can hamper a good meeting. To register, please use our online registration form or email lib-learning@umd.edu with the subject line "Meeting Management." Hiding in Plain Sight: Little Known Collections in the University Libraries
Curator Vin Novara will present The James J. Taylor Collection of the Washington Area Performing Arts Video Archive at the Michelle Smith Performing Arts Library, a cultural treasure for the Washington DC performing arts community and an unparalleled resource to the students and faculty at the University. One of only two such collections in the country devoted to providing public access to recorded theatre performances, this collection documents the creativity of a nationally recognized performing arts community. The event is free and no rsvp is necessary. Future talks are listed on the web at: http://www.lib.umd.edu/CLMD/SpecColl/hidinginplainsight.html. If you have questions or would like more information, please contact Joan Stahl (jstahl@umd.edu) or Vin Novara (vnovara@umd.edu). New Staff Orientation

Performance appraisals, if done right, can be a valuable tool in improving employee performance. If they are done improperly, they can be a waste of time for all those involved! Back by popular demand, and just in time for the performance review cycle, Sharon Armstrong (author of "Stress-free Performance Appraisals" - Career Press) returns to the University Libraries to lead this interactive, engaging workshop designed to assist managers and supervisors:
All supervisors are strongly encouraged to make time to attend this informative program. Although this presentation is designed for supervisors in mind, it is open to anyone interested in attending and developing their skills in this area.
