THE UNIVERSITY OF MARYLAND LIBRARIES’
MENTORING TASK FORCE REPORT
May 12, 2003

In March 2002 the Mentoring Task Force was created to assist in “establishing and maintaining a mentoring program that meets the needs of all Library staff.” The assignment of the Mentoring Task Force is shown below on the left, with the corresponding actions and recommendations of the Task Force shown on the right.

Identify situations in the library where mentoring could be used as an effective tool for orientation and professional development; Completed. See the Mentoring Program brochure, p. 2: Overview.
Develop forms that would facilitate the mentoring process; Completed. See sample Mentor and Mentee forms.
Assist in the development of a systematic way of matching Mentor and Mentee; Completed. See the Mentoring Program brochure and website http://whttp://www.lib.umd.edu/PASD/LPO/mentoring.html

Assist in the development and training of Mentors;
Assist in the development of a Mentor peer support network;
Establish a monitoring and evaluative system for the Mentoring Program;
Preliminary work completed. Further work on these assignments is deferred to the proposed Mentoring Advisory Committee.
Propose a Standing Committee on Mentoring if deemed necessary So proposed: See Recommendation II below.

Recommendations

  1. The Mentoring Task Force requests that the mentoring program as presented in the Mentoring Program brochure and the Mentoring Task Force website http://www.lib.umd.edu/PASD/LPO/mentoring/index.html be accepted by the Library Faculty Assembly.


  2. The Mentoring Task Force recommends that a Mentoring Advisory Committee (MAC) be established immediately as a Standing Committee of the Library Faculty Assembly to work in conjunction with the LBPO, Personnel Programs, to initiate the Mentoring Program.
  1. The MAC charge shall be to initiate, monitor, maintain, and modify the Mentoring Program as needed.


  2. MAC membership shall consist of two Library Faculty members, two Exempt or Non-exempt Library Staff members who are elected representatives of the Library Faculty Assembly, and the Coordinator of Personnel Programs. Term of service shall be two (2) years.


  3. The MAC tasks shall be to:
    • assist in the development and training of Mentors and Mentees;
    • assist in the development of peer support networks;
    • establish a monitoring and evaluative system for the Mentoring Program;
    • explore, study, and recommend incentives for Exempt and Non-Exempt Library Staff to the Library Faculty Assembly.

  4. MAC Timeline:
    • MAC shall begin service as soon as possible.
    • MAC shall implement the Mentoring Program by January 2004;
    • MAC shall recommend incentives for Exempt and Non-Exempt staff to encourage participation by Fiscal year 2005. (July 1, 2004)

Note: The Mentoring Task Force has prepared several prototype forms (see samples of the Mentor/Mentee Application forms) and collected various resources from other institutions that will be helpful to the MAC in implementing the Mentoring Program by recommended dates.
