Facilitator: Goetsch, Scribe: Wilson, Timekeeper: Rough
1. Topic: SPAT Projects Report
Leaders: Goetsch and Williams
Guest: Mary Dalto
Dalto reviewed the facilities projects ongoing in this fiscal year including moving shelving to Cole Field House, removal of shelving and collections from the ground floor of Hornbake, reconfiguration of the reference area and services in Architecture, moving oversized material and reconfiguring the reference collection in Art, proposed new desk configuration and collection shifting for Government Documents, placement of power poles in EPSL, adding more computers to the e-resources area in McKeldin, more shelving in Nonprint Media. The plant account currently has approximately $53K, most of which is already encumbered.
Outcome: LEC reaffirmed the need to receive LEC approval for all projects costing >$500; additional expenses up to another $500, but within the original scope of a project, may be approved at the discretion of the respective director and Mary Dalto.
2. Topic: Storage Facilities
Leader: Lowry
Lowry reported that the University of Maryland is working with Johns Hopkins to develop a proposal for a new remote library shelving facility to be used for fundraising with the State Legislature. The building will have a processing area, a cold storage room, and two storage bays, each housing 2.5-2.8 million volumes. Space to add two more bays is available. The facility will be located on property owned by Johns Hopkins at its Applied Physics Laboratory in Laurel, Maryland. The UM portion of the project is estimated at $6.0 million. Once funding is secured, a detailed building plan will be developed.
3. Topic: LIMS3 Update
Leaders: Ruschoff, Vikor, Wilson
The Chicago Public Library visit is on for Wednesday, January 21, 2004. Implementation Working Group is working on the Aleph enhancement process through North American Aleph Users Group.
4. Topic: Pop-ups
- Williams reviewed a draft memo regarding the new GAships offered through a pilot recruitment project. This memo will be sent out to staff.
- Williams noted that Carla Hayden will give a public lecture, sponsored by the Libraries, on March 9. It will extend the "equity of access" theme of her ALA presidency. The library committee also wants to do a small exhibit, with part in the case in McK lobby and part in the MCK Special Events Room. Williams asked about funding of about $2,000 total, which would cover exhibit expenses plus provide an honorarium for speaker Genna Rae McNeill, author of GROUNDWORK. LEC expressed concern about competition with/ from other campus events, which have been publicized on the poster already distributed throughout campus. Goetsch suggested Dr. McNeill might be part of campus' all-day event, April 16. Williams will confer with Johnnie Love about this possibility.
5. Topics for next meeting: January 27, 2004
- EPSL and other Library Facility Issues
- Gifts in Kind
