Library Executive Council Minutes of the Meeting - May 25, 2004
Present: Goetsch, Lowry, Rough, Ruschoff, D. Vikor, Williams and Wilson
Facilitator: Wilson, Scribe: Rough, Timekeeper: Lowry
1. Topic: Leadership Development Institute (LDI), Foundations of Leadership Program
Leader: Goetsch
Guest: Tony Prosseda
Outcome: Tony Prosseda presented an enthusiastic report on his participation as the Library System’s 2004 nominee to this 13-day program. The program follows the “emotional intelligence” model, which emphasizes self-control, team building and facilitation strategies, and the reinforcement of common sense and common practice solutions to problems. It provided practical training as well as theory, focusing on improving communication with co-workers, and gave an excellent overview of available campus resources. Tony Prosseda will be invited to present a review of this program to an All Staff meeting in the future. Donna King has been selected by LEC to attend the next LDI program in the fall. LEC plans to nominate additional staff members to attend future institutes. The University has reduced funding to this program next year and there will be only a single offering.
2. Topic: DRUM (Digital Repository at the University of Maryland)
Leader: Wilson
Guests: Dave Cooper, Karla Hahn
Outcome: Karla Hahn and Dave Cooper presented an overview of DRUM including information on draft deposit criteria, including intellectual property rights, for the UM Faculty Community. Deposited files will be maintained indefinitely. Deposits will be reviewed by library staff for basic accuracy of metadata, fulfillment of the deposit criteria, successful attachment of file, etc. Deposits that do not meet these criteria can be removed from the archive without notice to the depositor. Deposits will be maintained in “communities,” the highest level of organization within DRUM. Karla noted that there is still a need to create FAQs for faculty to answer questions such as: “What happens to my files when I leave UM?” It is expected that DRUM will be previewed for Library Faculty and Staff in July, prior to its introduction to the campus this fall.
5. Topic: Pop-ups
Leader: Wilson
- Welcome Desk (Goetsch) – Goetsch reported that there has been a significant drop-off in participation at the McKeldin Welcome Desk. As this is a Library-wide initiative, it is time to “rally the troops to volunteer.” Moved to the June 1 LEC Agenda for further discussion.
- Jewish Studies Cataloger (Ruschoff) – Marcia Goldberg will be unable to catalog Jewish studies books for the foreseeable future. With a growing backlog of Jewish studies materials, LEC approved the hiring an additional cataloger to assist in the cataloging of these materials so that we do not fall impossibly behind.
- UMCP @ 150 (Wilson) – The 150th anniversary of the founding of the University of Maryland offers many opportunities and challenges for presenting virtual as well as physical exhibits of campus history. ITD staff is ready to assist in the planning for virtual exhibitions, and Wilson will discuss possibilities with Anne Turkos.
6. Topic: Announcements
- A final review was made of the LEC website, designed and implemented by Loretta Carstens. Names and terms of service for past LFA chairs will be included on the website. The URL for the website is: http://www.lib.umd.edu/groups/lec/index.html.
- All library staff are to be urged to participate in the Library’s ongoing diversity and work culture survey.
- Tom Wilson will have the honor of introducing Arthur C. Clarke (via a conferencing system) as a speaker at ALA.
7. Topic: Agenda Topics for June 1, 2004 LEC Meeting
