Minutes of the Meeting - November 9, 2004

Topic: Grants Updates and Questions
Leader: Williams; Guests: Plank (& Wellens & Packer)

Outcome: Receive update on activities and advise on possibilities for near-future grant applications.
Plank reported on the submission of the $879K NEH grant for Hornbake humidification; the NEH grant for which Schreibman is PI (w/ U. Vancouver and UVA) for $140K; and work on updating the Grants website on activities since 2000.

Outcome: Receive reports and advise on planned activities.
Wilson, Harr and Feinstein are exploring matching grants for Selch contributions. Three millionth volume celebration is planned, w/ private event on January 25 and public event on January 26, 2005. Women in Broadcasting exhibit to complete NEH grant obligation is begun, but no date is set yet. The annual faculty/staff campaign will focus on support for the Prange endowment, which needs to be increased to $20K so that income can be expended, and also the Staff Training GA support.

Topic: Pop-ups

  • Vikor: Brought to the table the sponsorship of the ASIST meeting at UMUC by UML. It was agreed that since there will be no costs, there was no reason not to do so.
  • Williams: It was agreed that the December all staff meetings would include the topics of a strategic planning update and Aleph version 16 implementation.

Announcements:

  • Lowry will not be teaching in the spring, but LBSC 734 will be offered. He will tentatively teach it again the fall.
  • Williams reported that the Planning Task Force has met three times and is doing an environmental scan first. She will write an article for Library Matters inviting staff to "read along" with the task force on important documents for the environmental scan.
  • Vikor reported on a Nov. 8 visit of three librarians from LC, who met with several of our librarians and teaching faculty to develop plans for the LC-UM Libraries partnership.
  • Ruschoff reported that Disability Support Service have changed their policies regarding the interpreter service and doubled their fees without notice. The estimates for FY 2005 will rise from $1,080 to $2,160.
