Library Executive Council
Minutes of the Meeting - November 23, 2004

Present: K. Hahn (timekeeper), Lowry, Ruschoff, D. Vikor (facilitator), and Wilson (scribe)
Absent: Williams

Topic: CALD Staff Exchange Survey
Leader: Lowry

Outcome:
The Council of Academic Library Directors is seeking input for planning and implementing a new exchange program among member libraries to support staff enrichment and professional development. LEC provided input to the survey. The discussion suggested that emphasis should be placed on developing clearly articulated exchange proposals that last long enough to provide a meaningful experience.

Topic: Digital Library Initiatives (DLI)
Leader: Lowry;   Guest: Schreibman

Outcome: Schreibman shared some of the plans she has developed for the Digital Library Initiative and asked for comment and input. LEC and Schreibman agreed on some definitive next steps. 1) Schreibman will approach the Web Administration Committee to discuss a new top level web page for UM Digital Initiatives that reflects the breadth of projects already underway; 2) She will offer an XML class for library faculty and staff in early January. 3) Schreibman proposed outsourcing some digitization. More discussion is necessary; topic will be added to future LEC agenda.

Topic: Pop-ups

  • LEC approved funding for Dave Cooper, Uche Enwesi, and Paul Hammer to attend the Educause Mid-Atlantic Regional Conference in Baltimore and for Eiko Sakaguchi to visit the National Diet Library and the Nippon Foundation while in Japan.
  • LEC decided on next c-team agenda. Wilson will draft.
  • Ruschoff will follow-up with Williams regarding details about the use of library facilities procedure for non-library sponsored, fee-waived groups.
  • Ruschoff requested to fill an open position in serials; critical vacancies topic was added to the agenda of the next meeting.

Topic: Agenda for LEC Meeting, December 7, 2004
