LIBRARY EXECUTIVE COUNCIL
MINUTES
APRIL 11, 2006
9:00-11:00 a.m.
Present: Baughman (scribe), Lowry, Ruschoff, Vikor (facilitator), Wray (timekeeper)
Topic: Meeting Agenda
Outcome: No changes were made to the agenda.
Topic: External Relations Update
Outcomes: Jan Olsen updated LEC on current and upcoming activities. These include:
- An end of year appeal to library friends, which helps to increase the prospect pool for future donations and gifts.
- The Campus Annual Appeal that was also distributed at year-end. Jan noted that this effort placed the Libraries’ third on the list of possible donation options, which resulted in increased visibility. The tag line, “Nobody graduates from a library but nobody graduates without one,” was included in this appeal.
- Several events have taken place over the past several weeks:
- Katherine Anne Porter Lecture by Biographer Darlene Harbour Unrue on March 30, 2006
- An Evening with Corps of Cadets to Testudo's Troops on April 7, 2006
- The Nonprint Media Services event will be held on April 19, 2006.
- The publication Illuminations is replacing Library Issues, which was published four times per year. Illuminations will be published biannually. External Relations was congratulated on a job well done. Jan shared that they have received a number of positive comments.
- Current donor prospects receive ongoing attention and new prospects are being developed. The Libraries’ goal for the University campaign is $20 million – we are well on our way to reaching this.
Topic: Travel Funds
Outcome: LEC reviewed the status of funds yet to be expended, which is in the range of $20,000. Some accounting of this is due to staff not spending their allocations of $250.00. Most library faculty have expended their allocations. LEC then reviewed the requests for additional funding, which resulted in a reallocation of approximately $11, 345. The Directors will contact the individuals for whom additional funds are available. These funds need to be expended by early June.
Topic: Pop-ups
Outcomes:
- OCLC Perceptions Presentation. PALINET is seeking a location in Maryland to hold this presentation. Ruschoff will investigate whether there is interest in holding this event at the Libraries and will bring the issue back to LEC.
- Summer Youth and Training Program. Prince George’s County offers a summer program that finds employment for high school students. Wray will follow-up with the contact person for the program and then explore interest in the program with supervisors.
- Search Committees. A question has been asked about the role of search committees in discussing salary options with candidates. It was agreed that all questions concerning salary should be referred to Jane Williams.
- Development Coordinator Position. LEC agreed to open the search process for this position.
Topic: Announcements
Outcomes:
- Ruschoff announced that OCLC, through its Open World Cat Program, is allowing for user contribution via the addition of tables of contents and reviews of materials. She will forward the OCLC press release to all staff.
- Lowry announced he has completed his recommendations for Promotion and Permanent Status.
Topic: Agenda for April 18, 2006
Topic identified for the next meeting is the PAL Service Model and Variations Project discussion with guests Connie Mayer, Jean Phillips and Susan Schreibman.
