LIBRARY EXECUTIVE COUNCIL
May 23, 2006
10:00 a.m. – 12:00 noon

Attending: Baughman (facilitator), Ruschoff (timekeeper), Vikor, Williams, Wray (scribe)
Absent: Lowry

Topic: Interlibrary Loan Processes and Costs
Leader: Wray
Guest: C. Wright
Outcome: Continued discussion from May 16 LEC meeting. Reviewed comments obtained from ILL-L listserv query on how libraries are handling ILL workload increases. Identified several short term issues for exploration: Develop workflow to assure that staff effectively screens borrowing requests for materials that are available locally as licensed e-journals; consider using RAPID ILL (learn more at ALA); better understand cost/effort involved in using ARIEL vs. Odyssey to receive articles; explore adding union listing for serials into OCLC (Tanner and Carlen will follow up). Longer term: Determine philosophy of what level of ILL service the UM Libraries are willing to offer; do complete analysis of all ILL costs, including OCLC budget (projected by Carlen to be $30K+5% increase per month in 06/07), invoices, deposit accounts (including Ingenta), etc. ILL budget topic will return to a LEC meeting after ALA.

Topic: Guidelines for Teams
Leader: Baughman
Guests: Hanson, Mattlage, Todd
Outcome: Reviewed Guidelines for Teams document. The document has been tailored to work for the UM Libraries teams and is organized into brief sections on different topics. LEC members will redistribute the document to team leaders and teams and encourage their team leaders to utilize the document. Some situations in which the document may be most helpful: when new team leaders receive orientations; when teams (re)form or bring on new members; when leadership changes; when a team tackles an issue that has not been previously addressed. The UM Libraries Facilitators' Team is interested in hearing from staff what enhancements would make the document more useful.
