LIBRARY EXECUTIVE COUNCIL
MEETING MINUTES
May 27, 2008
10:00 a.m. – 12:00 noon

Present: Baughman, Day, Lowry (scribe), Ruschoff (timekeeper), Vikor, Williams, Wray (facilitator)

Topic: MDL Activities Update
Day and Lowry briefed LEC on the history and progress of the Maryland Digital Library (MDL) program that was authorized with one-time funding in 1999 and was established as a permanent program of the Maryland Higher Education Commission (MHEC) by 2004 legislation. MDL has had large success as a “buyers club” for databases and has developed contacts with the public library and K-12 sectors to develop statewide multi-type purchasing through a consortium of Maryland consortia, the Maryland Library Consortium (MLC).

Outcomes: There will be a transition to Vikor as chair of the MDL group and chief representative to the MLC. Day will continue to work for several months to assist in the transition.

Topic: GIS/Data Repository
Guests Cindy Todd and Kim Ricker presented a “Proposal to establish a GIS Repository/online interface for GIS Data Collection Access.” The main purpose is to provide access to GIS data rather than to develop a significant repository. The recommendation is to implement “Plan C” in the report as a “modest first step” that will allow UM to exploit a software interface developed at UNC and NCSU.

Outcomes: For next steps it was decided that we should assess the budget and effort implications for implementing Plan C. Todd and Ricker will meet with designated ITD staff to discuss the impact and UNC and NCSU staff will be contacted for their assessment of the level of effort. Once this initial assessment is developed a budget proposal will be submitted to LEC.

Topic: Pop-Ups

  • UM votes on representatives to RLG Council were discussed and decided.
  • Request to move WAM computers will be held until after the retreat.

Topic: Agenda for Next LEC
It was decided that the agenda would be developed at the retreat since there are at this time insufficient topics for June 3.
