Brainstorming Scenarios for April Conflict Management Sessions (handout)

Leader: Maggie Saponaro

In April, Roger Candelaria, Campus Compliance Officer, will be conducting two Conflict Management sessions. The learning objectives will be to focus on gaining practical skills for managing internal conflict between peer-to-peer or supervisor-to-peer. Candelaria asked for suggested themes or scenarios, specific to interpersonal situations found between library personnel, from which he could develop case studies. SECT brainstormed possible scenarios. These included:

  • Team is working on a project and a member misses the deadline for their piece
    • Workload varies
    • Perceived workload
    • How do you manage and also be accountable to the team
  • Supervisor wants staff member to participate in Learning Curriculum/Committee activities and the staff member resists
  • Supervisor resists staff member’s desire to participate in Learning Curriculum and/or committee activities
  • Noisy, profane, messy neighbors and/or types of music played – how do you resolve? (Especially in “cubicle” situations)
    • Encroaching on another’s space [related issue]
  • Co-workers exhibiting negative behavior (gossip, attitude, etc.) to others
  • Supervisor not creating positive work environment
    • Open lines of communication [not present]
    • Favoritism
  • Ongoing communication problems with colleagues while working on projects (consistently not returning phone calls/e-mails)
  • Staff member is unresponsive in addressing complaints of “too much work, not enough time, etc.” with supervisor
  • Blatant disregard/disrespect of meeting ground rules (passing notes, turning away from the group, having side conversations)
  • Cultural/customs differences in terms of speaking up to supervisors about potential issues/problems
  • Inappropriate language from co-workers [heard while they are working at their desk]
  • Workspace setting does not allow for private/confidential conversation
    • How do you compromise
    • How do you “peacefully co-exist in ‘cubicle-land’”?
  • Personal disagreements from outside the meeting between two members of a team is brought into the meeting,
    • Causes discomfort
  • Colleagues on [numerous] outside committees – leaving campus frequently and adding to the workload of colleagues [by not being around to do their job]
  • Staff member threatening to quit or file a grievance (more than once) when corrected
