Topic: Review of Agenda (Johnnie)

Additions to the agenda: approval of the November meeting minutes. Maggie has added herself to the meeting role rotation.

Welcome to Diane Harvey (Maggie)

Diane Harvey will be the new User Education representative replacing Jenny Hatleberg. Maggie gave a brief overview of what the team has been working on. Diane explained to the group that she is the Undergraduate Studies Librarian. She assists with undergraduate programs such as Living Learning Communities, Honors, Gemstone, First Year Book, Core classes, and Academic Integrity; and she makes sure that library staff are aware of undergraduate needs.

Update on Statistics Gathering Project (Jenny)

Holley St. Germain in ITD is still developing the online form for reporting library staff instruction statistics. Jenny outlined possible publicity venues for the form including an article in Library Matters, an All-Staff Meeting, and an article in the newsletter that SECT is developing with Jennifer Hanna. There will be a testing period for members of SECT to try out the online form before it is launched to all library staff.

Outcomes: The team also suggested announcing the new form at Division/Department meetings. Liz volunteered to write the Library Matters article.

Update on Continuing PR work with Jennifer Hanna (Maggie)

Maggie and Jenny met with Jennifer Hanna to create a template for a SECT/Learning Curriculum newsletter. The newsletter will be similar to the Facilities News monthly newsletter. It will be an email attachment in Word document format. The first newsletter is scheduled for release on February 2, 2007 and will be sent out the first Friday of each month thereafter. Maggie used a visual aid to demonstrate to the group what the newsletter will look like. There will be a standard header/footer, a calendar section noting upcoming events and workshops, and a section with training tips for the month. The newsletter will be light in tone, pithy, and colorful. Maggie asked for suggestions on a possible title for the newsletter. Maggie also handed out a progress chart on our other PR activities.

Outcomes: Sue K. recommended that a testimonial section offering positive reviews of LC workshops also be included in the newsletter. Team members suggested the following newsletter titles: “SECTional News” (Bob), “SECT Ed. Notes” (Johnnie), and “The Friday InterSECTion” (Liz). Maggie and Jennifer Hanna will make the final decision on the title.

Spring Semester Program Overview (Maggie)

Maggie distributed a handout outlining Learning Curriculum programs this semester. She noted that the January 25th Stress-Free Performance Appraisals workshop had not met the minimum number of participants. The deadline to attend this workshop is January 18th and if there are not enough participants the workshop may be cancelled. Please encourage your co-workers to attend! The online FAR system opens on January 15th. This system will replace the paper FAR and conflict of interest forms. If library staff cannot attend one of the three workshops, there will be an online handout. If absolutely necessary Maggie will meet with staff on an individual basis. Two HTML workshops are being offered as a warm-up for a User Education Guides workshop that will soon be announced.

Round Robin

  • Maggie: 1. Reminded the group to approve the November 2006 minutes. The minutes were approved. 2. FYI: ILT will be sponsoring a workshop for library staff on primary source research. The workshop is scheduled for February 27, 10:00am, 2109 McKeldin.
  • Liz: Announced that the University of Maryland documentary film “Keeping the Promise” won a gold award at the CASE (Council for Advancement and Support of Education) competition. University Archives staff spent many hours assisting the Office of University Communications on this project.
  • Christine: Reminded everyone to register for ALA Annual meeting in Washington, D.C. this summer. Pre-register this fiscal year to use up your staff development money, with the added benefit of registration being less expensive the earlier you register.
  • Sue K.: (It’s her first day back to work!)
  • Johnnie: New Student Orientation will be offered on January 30th. Please encourage all of your new student assistants to participate.
