Staff Education Coordinating Team (SECT) Minutes for January 11, 2005

Present: Sue Baughman, Jenny Hatleberg, Bob Kackley (Notetaker), Susan Koutsky, Johnnie Love, Jennifer Muter, Tony Prosseda (Timekeeper), Ambika Sankaran, and Maggie Saponaro (Facilitator)

Agenda

Minutes were approved for posting on the SECT web page

SECT Computer Training Survey

Jennifer had made a few changes in this survey proposal since the last December meeting. Next, it will be submitted to LARC for its approval as well as, simultaneously, to Gary Phillips in ITD in order to develop a tabulating program for its hopeful release in early February (this will be accompanied by a reminder announcement about this survey in the February 11th Library Matters to library staff members). The deadline for the survey will be February 25th.

Outcome: At the March 8th meeting SECT members will analyze the survey responses from library staffers.

Update on Spring 2005 Staff Learning Activities

Thus far, for Spring 2005, there are two Power Point clinics. One was held today, and another will be held from 1-2:30PM on Tuesday, January 25th. Also, there is a Time Management Program from Barbara Goldberg and Beverly Greenfeig called "Work Smarter Not Harder" from 10-12Noon on Thursday, January 20th.

Two Corporate Time Handouts are being developed, which will be posted online shortly. Maggie will work on setting up Learning Curriculum sessions on Tapping Creativity, How to Deal with Difficult People, and Presentation Skills. Jennifer Muter will be working on a Microsoft Publisher program for later in the Spring.

Outcome: This will be revisited at our next meeting, February 9th, to review and be on the lookout for new ideas

Round Robin

  • Johnnie reminded everyone about the Diversity Committee Retreat to be held on Friday, January 21st as well as the concern over the lack of representation from PAL, EPSL, CHEM, ART/ARCH, as well as even from GAs and student assistants
  • Jenny H, via Peggy Antonisse, informed our group about the ILT (Information Literacy Team) Survey entitled, 2005 Needs Assessment of Staff Development, that is going to be sent out to library instructors and that responses would be appreciated back by Feb. 1st.
  • Susan narrated to us about the successful training for the new Aleph system going on in TSD (though for the Circulation staff there won't be new training). Also, she mentioned that the Preservation group is developing preservation training as a Learning Curriculum module through the aid of ideas from a video that they are watching now.
  • Tony assured us that the self-checking out station trials in Circulation have been going as well as could be expected at this point in time including the test practice station
  • Maggie wanted to thank Jennifer for updating the SECT page with the new meeting roles and times. Also, there is a move underway to pull the members of the Train-the-Trainers Team, established in the summer of 2001, back into the loop of SECT activities by adding them to the SECT reflector.

Next Meeting’s Agenda

The next SECT meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, January 11, 2005.

Future topics to be discussed include:

  • Further Discussion on the OCDA (Organizational Culture and Diversity Assessment) and where we stand
  • Update on the Spring 2005 Program
  • (if time permits) Review of the new and updated Learning Curriculum document
