Staff Education Coordinating Team (SECT) Minutes for September 9, 2003

Present: S. Baughman, O. Chadley, T. Hahn, J. Love, A. Masnik, A. Noda, M. Peterfreund, M. Saponaro, J. Williams (notetaker)

1. Adjustments to Agenda

Outcome: No adjustments/changes

2. Meeting Roles

Outcomes: Team agreed to rotate notetaking and timekeeping. Maggie S. will continue developing the agendas and facilitating the meetings. She will do a calendar of role rotation. (See below.)

3. Update on Staff Learning Activities

Maggie S. distributed Learning Curriculum calendars for October and November, featuring repeats of three “Season for Supervisors” sessions and a new workshop, “Giving and Receiving Feedback.”

Outcomes: Trudi mentioned that the Information Literacy Team may sponsor a seminar for library faculty on presentation skills, taught by Anne Warren of the Academy for Excellence in Teaching and Learning. She will keep SECT posted. Maggie S will follow up with Gretchen Hanson on how training went for Research Port, whether the training could be a tutorial and, if so, the possibility of sending it to all library staff. (Update: E-mail sent to Gretchen 9/10/03 asking for handout to be sent to Lib-Staff. Handout attached.)

4. Writing Workshop Survey

Marissa reported 13 staff members so far have responded to the online survey asking interest in additional writing workshops.

Outcome: She will re-send the survey, making clear it is for everyone, regardless of attendance at a previous writing workshop.

5. Future Training Topics for Continuous Learning Subcommittee of Diversity Committee

SECT members discussed the August “Dealing with Differences” workshops and acknowledged that activities could have been better tied together and that time constraints hindered in-depth, attitude-changing exploration of issues.

Outcomes: Ann will pursue the idea of C. Clark and M. Brimhall-Vargas, leaders of the workshop, meeting with library teams and other work groups to pursue other areas of diversity and dealing with differences. Jane will ask C. Clark if the Office of Human Relations Programs does a “Classroom Climate” type of workshop for dealing with diverse classes and interacting with students.

6. Round Robin

Akemi said TSD continues with internal training on the new LIMS. Jane reported that eleven people, including student assistants, attended the September 3 safety & security workshop for Art and Architecture staff. Trudi noted that the Honors 100 classes will start soon in 7121 McKeldin, which will be outfitted with laptop or desktop computers. Anyone else using the room from late September through mid October should be careful to re-arrange the room for the Honors classes. Otis said that the Peer Training Group needs to meet to plan fall classes. Marissa asked SECT members to encourage colleagues to complete the survey on writing workshops. She noted there will be an article in the September 12 Library Matters on online registration for workshops.

7. Next Meeting
