Introductions

Leader: Jenny H.

The newest SECT member, Elizabeth (call her Liz) McAllister was introduced along with our guest, Jennifer Hanna.

Adjustment and Approval of Minutes

Leader: Jenny H.

Outcome: There were no changes or additions to the Agenda, and the 8/8/06 SECT Meeting Minutes were approved.

Marketing Strategies

Leader: Jennifer Hanna

Jennifer passed out an excellent handout entitled Draft Learning Curriculum (LC) Marketing Plan, prepared for this SECT Meeting that included three current LC Marketing Activities, as well as three Recommendations for Additions or Adjustments to them.

It was noted that only two of the workshops, Safety and Security as well as Sexual Harassment Prevention, are mandatory. The other workshops, due to the fact that they are optional, are not as well attended as we would like to see, creating a relatively big hurdle.

Outcome: Maggie, Jennifer H. and Jenny K. will write up a draft newsletter, similar in tone to Facilities News. Hanna will follow-up with WAC regarding having a pop-up window or other web design features that could enhance the visibility of SECT Programs. Johnnie brought out that having these programs linked to PRD performance rating could help out as well. Jane will add a discussion of incorporating Learning Curriculum programs to the LEC pending topics list, for Maggie to visit LEC at a later date.

Update on Outcomes-Based Evaluation

Leader: Maggie

Maggie, along with Jenny K, have been working on analyzing the Learning Curriculum Session-End and Six Month Follow-Up Surveys requested to be completed by Learning Curriculum attendees for each program given. Maggie passed out a handout related to this, and reviewed survey results to date. Maggie noted she and Irma Dillon would be making a presentation at the ARL Assessment Conference on September 27, 2006 in Charlottesville, VA.

Outcome: Maggie will tell us about that conference and, also, give us a progress report on the work that she, Irma, and Jenny are doing on this.

Marketing Activities--Follow-up Progress Chart

Leader: Maggie

Maggie passed out a sheet on the Follow-up Progress related to the Marketing Activites worked on at the 8/8/06 SECT Meeting. Each bulleted item was accessed for its completion or subsequent plan of action in the next month or two.

Outcome: SECT will tackle the final marketing segment, High Impact/High Effort Marketing Strategies, at the next meeting (or possibly the meeting after that one in in November).

Round Robin

Leader: Jenny H.

  • Sue and Johnnie told us about the pilot project that they and Maggie have been setting up involving the Leadership Practices Inventory that can be used as an assessment tool in order to determine leadership strengths and weaknesses.
  • Jenny H. informed us that McKeldin 7121 would have new computers in that room for the GEMS 100 as well as the new GA classes.
  • Maggie passed out the September-December 2006 Program Update to the group. It was noted that the SLA "Writing for Publication" Teleconference would be held in two places on campus simultaneously which are 7121 McKeldin as well as 0302J Hornbake. Then, she filled us in on more details about the "Coming soon ...." for November, December, and January with presenters such as Pat Wagner and Sharon Armstrong.
  • Jenny K. will take care of the reporting in Library Matters the Fall Learning Curriculum preview.

Next Meeting's Agenda for October 10, 2006

Outcome: Tentative agenda for September meeting

  • Review of Training and Travel Spreadsheet (Joyce)
  • High Impact/High Effort Marketing Strategies (?? --- since Sue K. will not be here for this meeting it was considered bringing Jennifer Hanna back, if she could come, to lead this. Maggie will contact Jennifer H.)
