Present: Bob Kackley (facilitator), Amrita Kaur (notetaker), Sue Koutsky (timekeeper), Jenny Kinniff, Liz McAlister, Christine Morris-Sumlin, Maggie Saponaro, Charles Wright, Denise Wright

Absent: Johnnie Love, Diane Harvey, Sue Baughman

Topic: Adjustment to the Agenda and Approval of September Minutes

Outcome: No adjustments to agenda. The September minutes were approved.

Topic: SECT Workplan Review

Outcomes: The group reviewed the draft workplan as distributed with the September Minutes. Minor revisions were identified – namely, to set benchmarks after the evaluation process is complete. Maggie will make the needed revisions and give the final Workplan to Jenny for posting on the SECT website.

Topic: Learning Curriculum Evaluation Project

Outcomes: Maggie provided an overview of evaluation activities that have taken place to date. These include:

  • Session-end evaluation summaries (for individual programs, 2001-present)
  • Six-month outcome based evaluation summaries (for individual programs, starting with those taught in July 2005-present)
  • Computer Training Surveys – 2003 and 2005
  • Writing Workshop Survey – 2004
  • 2005 Attendance Report – shared with LEC in May, 2005
  • 2007 Attendance Report – to be shared with LEC on October 16th

While these individual efforts have occurred, a comprehensive evaluation of the Learning Curriculum as a whole has not been conducted. Irma Dillon (MIS) will be attending the December SECT meeting to help us prepare for/identify areas to evaluate and plan next steps. One aspect to consider evaluating is staff recognition of the Learning Curriculum. It was also suggested that the original goals/mission of the Learning Curriculum be reviewed in order to see if present activities still meet these goals.

The group agreed to review the Learning Curriculum document (http://www.lib.umd.edu/groups/learning/curriculum.html, last revised June 2005) and Working Paper #3: Becoming a Learning Organization (http://www.lib.umd.edu/PUB/working_paper_3.html, January 2001) prior to the next team meeting.

Topic: Round Robin

Outcomes: Members shared timely information:

  1. Denise reported that Ethel Wilson (Program Management Specialist) will be starting in the Budget office on Monday, October 15th. Ethel’s duties will include processing travel and working with the gift accounts.
  2. Sue Koutsky reported that she will be co-presenting a disaster planning workshop at the upcoming MARAC (Mid-Atlantic Regional Archives) Conference. She is co-presenting with a colleage from VCU.
  3. Jenny distributed a handout outlining workshops scheduled through November. She noted there were few seats available for the computer training workshops scheduled from October 15th-18th. The Sexual Harassment Prevention Program has two seats remaining and capacity for the program was expanded due to the number of registrations received. New staff are encouraged to attend the “Secrets of Meeting Management” workshop, and all are encouraged to register for the “Stress Management” program. The most recent addition to the calendar is the “Stress-Free Performance Appraisals” program, scheduled for November 27th.
  4. Christine has been working on her “TERP Tip” article, which will cover RSS feeds.
  5. Liz will be attending the upcoming MARAC conference and assisting Gretchen Gueguen with the scanning workshop she will be presenting.
  6. Maggie distributed copies of the October Learning InterSECTion, which includes the “kickoff” article for “TERP Tips”. Maggie also noted she had contacted Carlen on October 1st to inquire if a member from ITD could be identified to fill the slot vacated when Joyce Chestnut retired this month. Maggie will follow up with Carlen on this.
