SECT Minutes, October 11, 2005Attended: Sue Baughman, Joyce Chestnut (Facilitator), Jenny Hatleberg (Notetaker), Bob Kackley, Sue Koutsky, Johnnie Love, Ambika Sankaran, Maggie Saponaro, Jennifer Tate IntroductionsJoyce asked us each to mention something positive or productive that we had accomplished in the last week or so. AnnouncementAmbika S.: Rebecca Wilson is printing 17 copies of the meeting guidelines poster, which will be distributed to all libraries to put in their meeting rooms. MinutesMinutes from the September meeting were approved. SECT MembershipLeader: Maggie S. At last month’s facilitator’s review, someone suggested that SECT include a member from Special Collections. Maggie solicited suggestions for who to contact (members of Special Collection’s new training team, the new Administrative Assistant, Kevin Hammett, Lauren Brown). Maggie will follow up. Netscape MailLeader: Ambika S. In November, the Libraries will be switching from Netscape Mail to Mozilla Thunderbird. Ambika has been developing a class on the new e-mail platform, using some information from ITD. She will teach that instead of Netscape Mail. The class will also cover features of the webmail interface and some e-mail etiquette. There will be two sessions of the class (November 3 and 15), which is being developed as a result of last year’s staff training survey. Student Assistant OrientationsOver 80 student assistants participated in 3 orientation sessions in September; in fact, more students came to the sessions than had registered. There was a very positive response to the orientations. Johnnie has scheduled a fourth session, to take place in November. This is the first year that Student Assistant Orientations have been done. More will be scheduled in the Spring. New Staff LuncheonThe New Staff/Goodwill Luncheon will take place October 12, 11:30am-1:30pm in MCK 6137 The Libraries have hired more than 60 new faculty and staff this year! The luncheon is being held to welcome them and to celebrate the university’s 150th anniversary. Johnnie encouraged all to attend. Summer 2005 Program EvaluationLast year, Irma Dillon met with SECT and created a “logic model” to use to evaluate the Learning Curriculum program as a whole. This is an outcome-based, long-term evaluation plan that will use online surveys and attendance counts to determine the effectiveness of staff learning programs. One survey is sent immediately following a staff learning program, and a second survey will be sent six months later to determine how staff have used the skills they learned. Maggie has found that online surveys provide more detailed feedback than paper forms. E-mail messages are sent out to session participants with links to the online surveys. Maggie shared a draft of the online survey that will be sent out six months after a program, and solicited feedback. The revised survey will be reviewed at LARC’s next meeting. Round RobinMaggie S.: Shared Fall staff learning programs. There will be a new program on the Publishing Process, with presenters from book and journal publishers. Dean Lowry will provide insight on the editing process. The program will be held in the Special Events room, so there is no cap on attendance. Bob K.: EPSL librarians are working on developing a peer training session on PubWest and other engineering resources. The program will be held in November or December, probably with two sessions (one in EPSL, one in McKeldin). More information will follow. Joyce C.: ITD has had a mold problem, particularly near their conference room. This has been taken care of, but there will be another test this fall to make sure. Next Meeting: November 8, 2005 (MCK 7121)Facilitator: Jenny Hatleberg, note taker: Bob Kackley; time keeper: Sue Koutsky
