Staff Education Coordinating Team (SECT) Minutes for October 12, 2004

Present: Sue Baughman (facilitator), Maggie Cunningham (timekeeper), Bob Kackley, Sue Koutsky, Johnnie Love, Jennifer Muter (guest), Tony Prosseda, Ambika Sankaran (guest), Maggie Saponaro (notetaker), and Jane Williams.

September Meeting Minutes Review/Approval

The minutes were approved. Maggie S. will post these on the SECT web page.

Computer Training

Office 2003 – Maggie S. noted that she, Jennifer, and Ambika had been upgraded to Office 2003 in anticipation of the library-wide rollout this week. Tutorials and handouts for Office 2003 were in the process of being updated, and will be posted to the Staff Learning website. Jennifer has prepared an article highlighting the changes in Office 2003, which will appear in the next issue of Library Matters. Maggie S. will also send out an E-mail message to all-staff indicating this article is forthcoming.

Computer Training Survey – The group reviewed the survey form and results from the 2002 computer training survey. The prior survey had been paper-based, and the group indicated the next survey should be online. Suggested revisions included adding a space for individuals to volunteer to lead training sessions, and including a note that Aleph training would not be covered in the scope of the survey. The survey will be conducted after Aleph training is completed (February), although the group agreed to “test drive” the survey when it is developed. One suggestion for computer training was to continuously offer courses (pending lab availability). Maggie S. asked that additional comments/revisions for the survey be sent to her by the end of this month.

Computer Competencies/Expected Skills – The group reviewed the “Windows Competencies” checklist, and discussed whether or not a similar checklist should be developed for specific software packages. Maggie S. asked the group to look for checklists that may already exist for MS Office and Windows, and to send their findings to Maggie prior to the next meeting. Another program which may require a competency list is Netscape Mail.

Update on the Peer Training Collective

Bob indicated that interest in the Peer Training Collective (PTC) has waned. There have been some items requested (Science Direct training, McKeldin tours), but overall the group has not been active recently. Coordination of activities on the Staff Learning Calendar is a key item, which will hopefully continue in the absence of the PTC. Jane suggested Bob and Maggie S. work on an article/announcement in Library Matters, noting that SECT can serve as a resource for training ideas individuals may have. Bob indicated he would be willing to serve as a resource for the Science Direct session. He is interested in continuing to serve on SECT as a representative from the branches.

Organizational Culture and Diversity Assessment (OCDA)

Maggie S. noted that she has invited Paul Hanges (Industrial/Organizational Psychology) to attend the November All-Staff meetings (11/11 – 10:00-11:30, 11/16 – 2:30-4:00) and give a presentation on the results of the OCDA. If a summary report is received prior to the next SECT meeting, Maggie will distribute this to the group. Jane, Sue, and Johnnie will be making a presentation on the OCDA at the November ARL Human Resources Symposium.

Round Robin

  • Maggie S. reminded the group to please send feedback regarding the December programs, as outlined in her October 7th E-mail message. Feedback is due to Maggie by October 29th. Tony indicated he would ask PSD for input, Sue K. will ask TSD, and Jane Williams will ask PASD for feedback.
  • Johnnie inquired as to whether or not technology training should be included in new hire orientations. The group indicated that coordinating such training was the responsibility of the individual supervisor. Johnnie also indicated an interest in the topic of Emotional Intelligence, and will be attending an ARL post-conference next month. Johnnie agreed to develop a listing of objectives for a similar course/workshop (if offered by the Libraries) for the December SECT meeting.
  • Tony noted that an Emotional Intelligence workshop is being offered by University Human Resources, and will be held January 13, 2005. (Facilitator: Michele Ginnerty, course cost: $100.00).
