Staff Education Coordinating Team (SECT) Minutes for November 11, 2003

1. Adjustments to Agenda

Outcome: No adjustments were necessary.


2. Learning Curriculum Resource Library Update

Marissa reported that seven items have been signed out of LCRL. She distributed a newly developed bookmark. The bookmark advertises LC modules and helpful resources. The current bookmark is entitled Time Management. She is in the process of ordering one title from the bookmark. The title on order is “Take Back Your Time: How To Regain Control of Work, Information & Technology.”

Outcomes:

On November 19th, Marissa will begin soliciting donations for LCRL.


3. Mentoring and PRD Update

Johnnie reported that LFA has accepted the proposal for a Mentoring Advisory Committee. She indicated that UM Libraries need more mentors. There was discussion about the possibility of supervisors serving as “coaches,” in the PRD process. It was suggested that supervisors could work with library staff on their PRDs. Johnnie requested feedback from SECT members.

Outcomes:

Johnnie will ask supervisors if they would like a PRD workshop.


4. Update on Fall 2003 Staff Learning Activities

Maggie distributed a handout entitled Learning Curriculum Workshops. She reported that seventeen workshops have been offered since July 1st, the new fiscal year. The handout reported the number of participants and registrants. During Spring 2004, “Giving and Receiving Feedback” module will be offered again.

Outcome: Maggie will survey workshop participants in December. She is currently surveying the library subject teams for a possible workshop on “Dealing With Difficult Library Patrons.”

5. Update on Social Sciences Team Training/Orientation [Suggestions]

Maggie distributed and discussed a handout, which summarized the status of the suggested training and orientation sessions. The handout provided an overview of “Introductory/Basic-Level Modules” for Microsoft Access, Excel, and PowerPoint. Each session is two hours in length. She asked SECT for feedback on what to include in the modules.

Also, she informed SECT that Element K (free online OIT courses) is available for those who wish to learn various software packages. It was also noted that the Learning Curriculum Resource Library has books to assist library staff. Outcome: Maggie is currently soliciting feedback from the Social Science Team about contents for basic and intermediate level Microsoft modules. Outcome: Johnnie will survey library staff to determine interest in possible informational tours of UMCP Libraries.

6. Round Robin

  1. Ann Masnik reported that Heleni Pedersoli will suggest to LEC, workshops on “Dealing With Differences” for all library teams. She will ask LEC for feedback.
  2. Trudi will ask a teaching faculty to present a library workshop on classroom presentations and classroom management.
  3. Otis announced two upcoming peer- training workshops on searching Google. The workshops will be held Tuesday, November 18, 2:30 p.m.-3:30 p.m., EPSL Instruction Room, and Thursday, November 20, 10:00 a.m.-11:00 a.m., McKeldin Library, Room 2109. If you’re interested in attending a session, please contact Bob Garber.
  4. As part of Staff Learning and Development, Marissa is investigating the possibility of offering a Time Management workshop. The workshop may be held in Spring 2004. She asked SECT to suggest possible resource persons.
