Topic: Adjustment to the Agenda and Approval of October Minutes

Outcome: No adjustments to agenda. The October minutes were approved.

Topic: Learning Curriculum Evaluation Project

Outcomes: Irma will be coming to our December 11 meeting. To prepare, we brainstormed answers to the questions “What do we want to learn from an evaluation?” and “What questions do we have for Irma to help us move forward?” Answers were:

What do we want to learn from an evaluation of the Learning Curriculum?

  • Have we met the original Learning Curriculum goals? (staff skills)
  • Are they still the “right” goals?
  • Participation profile and gaps
  • Workshop timing
  • Are we offering the “right” workshops?
  • Supervisor attitudes: encourage / discourage / impediments
  • Dimensions of Learning Curriculum—more than workshops—perceptions
  • Are staff members getting training elsewhere?
  • Has the Learning Curriculum made a difference?

Questions for Irma:

  • What is out there to measure these kinds of services? Tools and methods
  • Who could help us with this evaluation?
  • Have these kind of services been evaluated in large research libraries? (e.g. ARL assessment conferences, ACRL)
  • What is the best timing in light of other assessment at UM Libraries?
  • How does this process tie into the strategic planning process?
  • Are we asking the right questions? / Finding out the right things?

Topic: Demo of Laptops Acquired for Use in Creating “Mini-Computer Sessions”

Outcomes: We saw a demo of four laptop computers that were set up for the intermediate HTML class. Eight laptops have been purchased, and they will be stored and charged in ITD. They will be part of the laptop loaner pool and are wireless capable. People that aren’t familiar with using a laptop may have a mouse hooked up. They are set up so that users face the large screen in the training room. The laptops can be moved to other rooms for training.

Topic: Spring 2008 SECT Meetings

Outcomes: The Spring 2008 meeting schedule is:

  • January 8, 1:00-2:00
  • February 12, 1:00-2:00
  • March 11, 1:00-2:00
  • April 8, 1:00-2:00
  • May 13, 1:00-2:00
  • June ?
Maggie will book the meeting room and send out a role rotation list.

Topic: Round Robin

Outcome: Members shared timely information:

  1. Charles Wright gave a presentation on ILL to a CLIS class.
  2. Bob Kackley and Jim Miller gave a patent and trademark presentation to a DC law firm. They will do another presentation in January for PG County. They will look into organizing a peer training workshop on patents and trademarks.
  3. Sue Baughman, Johnnie Love and Maggie Saponaro are leading an effort with about 12 other library colleagues in creating core competencies for supervisors. UM Libraries has over 80 supervisors. The group working on the project has been meeting and identifying competencies. They are trying to find ways to measure the competencies and exploring training ideas to help develop skills in the competencies. In the spring, all library staff will be asked for their input.
  4. Liz McAllister attended the Mid-Atlantic Regional Archives Conference (MARAC) meeting in Williamsburg and attended the scanning workshop given by Gretchen Gueguen. SCOT will assist with orienting Prange staff to Hornbake Library.
  5. Maggie Saponaro asked everyone to read the November Learning InterSECTion piece in the Library Matters blog. The December blog entry will be on Wikis by Diane Harvey. The January blog article on RSS feeds by Christine Morris-Sumlin is already completed. Maggie handed out a list of upcoming Learning Curriculum programs and will email the list to SECT members.
  6. Sue Koutsky also attended MARAC and taught a workshop in disaster preparedness and response. She reported that PLCT is interested in having a training session for staff on blogs. Maggie and Jenny will look into this.
