UM Libraries Web Site Purpose Statement

April 6, 2005

The Web site of the University of Maryland Libraries supports the educational mission of the University in the following ways: by providing access to scholarly resources, delivering web-based services, directing users to research assistance (both online and in-person), and publicizing the Libraries' collections and activities as well as their importance to the success and reputation of the University of Maryland as a premier public research institution.

While the Web site serves both the general public and the wider academic community, the primary users are the greater University community, especially students, faculty and Libraries' staff. Based on what we learn from these users, the Web site is designed to serve their needs.

The purposes of the Web site are to:

Enable Independent Access

  1. Provide unmediated access to research materials, both local and remote, and library collections.
  2. Offer clear paths to resources and/or assistance to enable the user to perform their research, assignments and duties.

Teach Research Skills

  1. Provide user education and assistance tools that build research confidence
  2. Encourage, through ease of use, students and faculty to contact Libraries staff for research assistance and education.
  3. Provide information about bibliographic instruction and research classes taught through the Libraries.
  4. Provide access to electronic guides and other documents.

Communicate about the Libraries

  1. Maintain a source of meaningful information regarding the University's libraries, resources, holdings, and policies.
  2. Provide a means to share information with library colleagues on campus, nationally and abroad.
  3. Function as a tool to help raise the profile of UM Libraries by highlighting value and accomplishments, promoting exhibitions and events, and providing information for giving opportunities.
