Guides Group Information

Statement of Purpose

Context:

In 1996, the Guides Group was created as an informal committee that would oversee the creation and maintenance of Guides to Information Resources and report to User Education Services. Since that time, the Guides Group has become more widely recognized and has contributed to standardized procedures for creating and maintaining Guides.

Guides to Information Resources are created by librarians in subject teams and other divisions within the libraries, including User Education Services, Special Collections, and Government Documents. Some guides are subject-specific and provide users with detailed information about library resources, while others describe how to use specific services provided by the UM Libraries. Currently, we maintain approximately 220 subject and general Guides to Information Resources.

Guides Group members act as liaisons between the Guides Group and their Subject Team or Division within the UM Libraries.

Responsibilities & Areas of Concern:

  • Develop procedures and standards for the creation of Guides to Information Resources.
  • Introduce new team members to Guides to Information Resources
    • Explain how Guides are used and created.
    • Provide training for creating Guides.
  • Respond to Guides Notification Forms submitted by team members who have created or revised Guides.
    • Review each Guides format to ensure that procedures have been followed.
  • Inform team members of significant changes to libraries web pages.
    • Assist Guides authors with updating their Guides to reflect these changes.
