Neuroscience & Cognitive Science
Scope: This is a selective guide to finding key research material in the areas of
Neuroscience & Cognitive Science. Neuroscience is the study of how the nervous system, composed of the brain and the spinal cord, develops and functions. Information sources included in this guide emphasize research areas of interest to
faculty and students in the Neuroscience & Cognitive Science (NACS) graduate program. Sources listed in this guide are compiled from Using the Biological Literature: A Practical Guide.3rd. Edition. by Diane Schmidt, Elisabeth B. Davis, and Pamela F. Jacobs., 2002.
Email the subject area specialist at

(These are ranked by impact factor, also please note that our print coverage of these journals is often not current)
To find articles in research journals, search any of the following databases using keywords
that describe your topic. Below is a list of databases covering the core study of neuroscience.
- Animal Behavior Abstracts
Indexes journal articles, book chapters, conference papers on all aspects of animal behavior.
- BIOSIS Previews
BIOSIS Previews provides the most comprehensive coverage to the literature of
the life sciences. Coverage includes primary research articles in the basic
areas of biology: botany, zoology and microbiology, as well as related fields such
biomedicine, agriculture, pharmacology and ecology.
- CogNet
Searchable collection of full text books, journals, conference papers, and reference sources in cognitive and brain sciences.
- CSA Neurosciences Abstracts
Covers all aspects of vertebrate and invertebrate neuroscience, including motor, visual, auditory, vestibular systems, neural networks, and computation.
- PubMed
National Library of Medicine's database covering abstracts to articles from U.S. and international biomedical journals. Indexing is from the mid-1960s to present.
- Web of Science (Science Citation Index)
The Science Citation Index Expanded (SCI) is an important tool for locating research articles.
SCI coverage is multidisciplinary and allows you to see the cited references (bibliography)
of a particular article, number of times an article has been cited and related records.
