Wikis
This information is for UM Libraries' staff.
What is a Wiki?
A wiki is a freely expandable collection of interlinked web pages, a database where each page is easily editable by any authorized user. In the context of the UM Libraries, a wiki is a tool which supports collaboration and information sharing among Libraries staff. A wiki is different from other Libraries' Web pages because it is run using special software which does not require proficiency with HTML. ITD uses TWiki wiki software.
Wikis are a useful conduit for information which should be stored in a central location, such as policies or a knowledge base. Wikis are also excellent tools for project management, providing a framework for tracking, group collaboration and document storage.
Wiki Policies
- Wikis are for a library staff audience only.
- Any full-time Libraries staff member may request ITD Web Services set up a wiki.
- Each wiki will have an administrator, i.e a staff member who is responsible for the wiki's content and for maintaining staff access to the wiki.
- ITD Web Services will provide hands-on training to administrators on how to manage the wiki software.
- Wikis will follow a standard look and feel approved by WAC and maintained by ITD Web Services.
- Wikis must directly support the work of the Libraries.
- Wikis can be set to be readable only by staff members registered by the wiki administrator.
Examples
- Wikis centered on a team, a group, a branch, a service point, etc. that provides information about events, staffing, policies, etc.
- Wikis centered around a project or Libraries service, especially ones that are cut across different teams, units or divisions.
