The
world’s premier pipa virtuoso
Wu
Man returns to the Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center for the
first time since her 2010 performance of A Chinese Home with the Kronos
Quartet to perform a program of traditional Chinese works. As a leading
ambassador of Chinese music, Chinese-born musician Wu Man has introduced the
pipa - the traditional, four-stringed Chinese lute - to new audiences from
around the world and has commissioned and premiered more than a hundred solo and
quartet works, concertos, opera, chamber, electronic and jazz music, as well as
in theatre productions, film, dance and collaborations with visual artists.
As part of an event series entitled Diversity Through Music (sponsored by the UMD Office of Diversity Education and Compliance and the Nyumburu Cultural Center, and with support from the Office of Diversity and Inclusion and the Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center), Wu Man brings the ancient instrument to life in CSPAC's Gildenhorn Recital Hall.
