One of Donizetti's most popular and successful operas, L'elisir d'amore tells the tale of a besotted peasant who turns to a quack doctor for a love potion in the hopes of wooing his beloved. This melodramma giocoso featured a libretto by Felice Romani, based on Eugene Scribe's libretto for Daniel-Francois-Esprit Auber's french opera Le philtre.
