Happenstance Theater presents an evening of fantasy. At the turn of the twentieth century, the Western world held sensational and spectacular notions about the Middle East. These romantic ideas spawned the public's fascination with Egyptian tombs, as well as with films like Lawrence of Arabia and The Sheik. FarFar Oasis contrasts these fantastical ideals with the realities of life in the desert through poetry, image, and song. The evening’s companion piece, Low Tide Hotel, is a theatrical scrapbook that Washington Post writer Celia Wren called “an enchantingly whimsical montage of maritime-themed songs and literary excerpts.” Co-Artistic Director Mark Jaster has compiled a list of books, films, and music that inspired these two extraordinary works:
