UMD School of Music presents

University of Maryland Symphony Orchestra: Last Waltz James Ross, conductor

Friday, October 28, 2011 8:00 pm - Dekelboum Concert Hall

Music director James Ross and the UMSO are joined by the next generation of classical artists for Last Waltz, a program featuring violinist Jonathan Richards, winner of the 2010 UMSO Concerto Competition. In addition to several symphonic warhorses, this program features the UMD Wind Orchestra for spirited performance of Toru Takemitsu's spiritual Signals from Heaven. Learn more about the pieces and composers featured on this program in the UM Libraries:

Dimitri Shostakovich - Violin Concerto No. 1, Op. 99: Don't miss Shostakovich's controversial and contested memoirs, Testimony, available in the Michelle Smith Performing Arts Library

Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky - Manfred Symphony in B minor, Op. 58: a programmatic symphony based on the eponymous poem by Lord Byron

Maurice Ravel - La valse: Originally conceived as a ballet, this choreographic poem is infused with the spirit of the waltz

Toru Takemitsu - Signals from Heaven: a chamber work by one of the most accomplished music theories, aestheticians, and composers of film and concert music of the 20th century
