Scott Eklund of the University of Maryland English Department will present the short film "Illusions" (1983) for discussion. He will also speak briefly to how he has used the film in the classroom for both English 101 and English 234 (Introduction to African American Literature).

"Illusions" is the creation of black independent filmmaker Julie Dash, who also produced, wrote, and directed the acclaimed full-length feature film "Daughters of the Dust." "Illusions," which received the 1989 Black Filmmakers Foundation Jury Prize for Best Film of the Decade, is the story of "a black woman studio executive who passes for white, and a black woman who is the singing voice for a white Hollywood star. The film follows the struggles of the women as well as the use of film in 1942 wartime Hollywood" (description from UM Libraries' Catalog).
