FAQ

Location/Hours

Q. Where is the Prange Collection located? Is the collection in more than one location?
A. The Prange Collection itself, where the original materials are housed and used, is located on the 4th floor of Hornbake Library. Note: Because the 4th floor of Hornbake Library is closed to the public, you cannot get off of the elevator on the 4th floor. You may take the elevator to the 3rd floor and walk the rest of the way or call the Prange Collection front desk at 301-405-9348 and a staff member will meet you in the lobby and escort you to the Prange Collection. The microforms of the Prange magazine and newspaper collections are located in the East Asia Collection on the 4th floor of McKeldin Library. The microforms are available, self-serve, anytime that McKeldin Library is open. You can download images from the microforms in PDF format to a USB drive, so bring a flash drive, if you are interested in downloading.

Q. Can I use the magazine/newspaper microfilm AFTER the Prange Collection (located in Hornbake Library) is closed?
A. Yes. The magazine and newspaper collection microforms are available, self-serve, in the East Asia Collection, 4th floor, McKeldin Library, anytime that McKeldin Library is open (See hours). If you are using the microforms for the first time, it is recommended that you come to the East Asia Collection during its business hours, so that East Asia Collection staff can assist you. All original Prange Collection materials are available in the Prange Collection, 4th floor, Hornbake Library, by appointment only. The Prange Collection is open 9:00am -5:00pm, Monday – Friday.

Transportation

Q. How can I get to campus?
A. One option is to take the Metro (Green Line) to the College Park-U of MD station. From the College Park Metro station, a bus, Shuttle-UM, is available to take you to campus. A University ID is not required for the route from the College Park Metro station. You will get off at the last stop, the Stamp Student Union, which is located at the intersection of Campus Drive and Union Lane. Both Hornbake and McKeldin Libraries are a short walk from the Student Union. See the Campus Map. For driving and rail directions, visit the University of Maryland website for directions.

Q. Where can I park?
A. We recommend that you park at the Union Lane Garage, which is adjacent to the Stamp Student Union. The garage is equipped with Pay-By-Spaces (Pay stations). The charge is $3.00 per hour, with a $15.00 maximum daily charge. It is a short walk from the garage to both Hornbake and McKeldin Libraries. The Regents Drive Garage is closer to Hornbake Library than the Union Lane Garage. However, the garage is dedicated primarily to parking for faculty, staff and students; there are a limited number of Pay-By-Spaces spaces for visitors. Please refer to the University of Maryland website for more parking information.
