Library Facility

In August 2007, the new Shady Grove Library opened it's doors! We are located in the brand new facility in Education Building III of the Universities at Shady Grove (USG), part of the University System of Maryland (USM), in Rockville, MD.
The library primarily supports the Universities at Shady Grove (USG) students, faculty and staff and their academic work related research. Books from the library can be borrowed with a valid USM ID card only. The computer stations and study areas are primarily reserved for USG patrons, but community patrons are also allowed to use the facility. Online access to Databases and e Journals are provided by UM Libraries, on-site only.

The new facility is 22,500 sq feet and provides the following resources:

• Comfortable study carrels and reading rooms. There are four different areas for quiet and group study:
  
  • Eight glassed-in group study rooms, each provide seating for four to eight patrons, located on two sides of the Reading room
    
  • The main Reading room has seating for 80 patrons, with state-of the art technology, in an Atrium setting
    
  • Individual study carrels are also located between the Stacks
    
  • For leisurely reading and laptop use, we also have a beautiful study lounge, equipped with 36 comfortable lounge chairs, bamboo floors and live greenery, with windows overlooking the garden

• The library and the whole building have Wireless access
• The library has a dedicated copy room, equipped with two photocopy machines (blk/wht & color), two computer printers (blk/wht & color), and a Pay-for-print (Debitek) card dispenser in a glass enclosed room. Please check with the library staff for the cost of using the printers and copiers
• Handouts of library services and resources, located at the Circulation desk. Library-relevant notices can also be found here
• Daily newspapers available for your convenience. Back issues are available up to three months
• Eighteen computer stations with Internet access, as well as many hookups for laptop computers in the Stacks area
• An ADA compliant workstation, with several adaptive technology software programs installed (ask staff for details)
• Canon Microfiche reader and scanner
• Three DVD and VCR viewing stations
• Special collections: Molly Counihan Childrens' book collection, featuring award-winning literature, Career Resources collection, New Arrivals for books, "Taking Sides" and "Opposing Viewponts" series for current issues

Books

The library provides access to the resources of the University System of Maryland (USM) libraries through the online Catalog. Access to the Catalog is available from any computer with Internet access, including the computers in the Shady Grove Library, in the Computer Labs, and via wireless access at the Shady Grove Center.

Students can use the Catalog's "REQUEST" command to have materials delivered from any USM library to Shady Grove for pickup. Books borrowed from other USM libraries may be returned at Shady Grove. The loan period for books varies, depending on the lending institution's loan policy. The loan period for Shady Grove books is 56 days for students.

The Shady Grove Library's print collection consists of approximately 10,000 books, mostly in the disciplines currently taught at the Shady Grove Center. There is a special area for "New Arrivals", Maps, Dictionaries, "Controversial Issues", as well as our main Reference collection. We also have a Reserves collection, for all faculty who wish to use it.

Journals: Print, Microfiche and e-Journals

• Wall Street Journal
• Washington Post

The library holds over 30 journals on microfiche. Please ask staff for the Microfiche title index. Patrons can view and print from our Canon microfiche scanner free of charge.

Electronic Journals are accessible via the UM Libraries page, or Shady Grove Library Web page - go to e-Journals. These are full text proprietary subscriptions, and you need to have a UMCP ID to access them remotely. Students of affiliated institutions other than UMCP can access databases for their institutions remotely using their barcode.

Electronic Resources

These online resources are available via University of Maryland, (UM) Libraries' ResearchPort Gateway to Databases. They provide full text, abstracts or bibliographic citations of articles, documents, conference proceedings, etc.

When in the library, connect to the Databases via Shady Grove Library's Web page. There is a large selection of full text and/or journal abstract citation databases available, including netLibrary titles for e-books.

When accessing remotely, use the USM Gateway, ResearchPort with uniform interface.

Additionally, we own some software on CD-ROM's, available only onsite at the Library. Subjects cover Business/Marketing, Hospitality Management, Social Work, and others. Ask staff for more information.

Videos

Shady Grove Library has a large and growing video film collection. These are mainly in subject areas taught at the Center. Videos are non-circulating, except to faculty, and for class viewing. Please ask for our Video titles index to see available titles. Patrons may view videos on our in-house VCR and DVD viewers.

Laptop Computers

The library now owns two laptop computers. Patrons with USM ID may check them out for use at SG Center premises. Shady Grove Center has wireless communication access. Laptops are lent out for 3 hours each time.
