Social Work Resources
Scope:
This guide provides a selected list of print and electronic resources in the field of Social Work. It is primarily intended as a general reference tool for UMBC and UMB Social Work Students at Universities @ Shady Grove, and others interested in the field.
The print resources listed here are available in the Shady Grove Library(SHADYG). These resources (SHADYG REF) are non-circulating items and cannot be borrowed from the library. Electronic resources include proprietary databases, E- Journals as well as Internet resources. In addition, current UMBC and UMB Social Work students, faculty, and staff also have access to their home library databases via Research Port.

- Academic Search Premier
Provides abstracts and indexing for over 7,000 multidisciplinary journals; covers full text of articles for over 4,000 scholarly publications,including more than 3,100 peer-reviewed publications.
- Family and Society Studies Worldwide
Coverage includes anthropology, sociology, social work, family issues, psychology, education and related topics.
- PsycINFO
Provides summaries of original research, articles, literature reviews, reports of surveys, case studies, theoretical discussions, and descriptions of tests and apparatus from 1887 to the present. Covers scholarly literature in all areas of psychology.
- Social Work Abstracts
Provides access to more than 45,000 records in all social work related topics such as aging, child and family welfare, homelessness, and substance abuse.
- SocIndex
A comprehensive sociology research database, SocINDEX contains informative abstracts for more than 620 "core" coverage journals dating back to 1895. Coverage includes abortion, criminology, criminal justice, cultural sociology, demography, economic development, ethnic & racial studies, gender studies, marriage & family, religion, rural sociology, social psychology, social structure, social work, sociological theory, sociology of education, substance abuse, urban studies, violence, welfare, and many others.

Founded in 1952, this partnership of educational and professional institutions, social welfare agencies, and private citizens is recognized by the Council for Higher Education
Accreditation as the sole accrediting agency for social work education
in this country.

American Public Welfare Association

The APWA web site is a good place to look for news concerning welfare, child welfare, health care reform and other issues involving families and the elderly. It provides state-by-state listings of relevant news items, and provides a browsable list of abstracts from many of its journals.

Columbia University's Social Work Library provides a comprehensive coverage of the various areas of social work including child welfare, gerontology, health and health care, international social welfare, marriage and the family, and social policy. The collection includes the Brookdale Memorial collection on Gerontology and the unique Social Work Agency Collection.

The site provides statistical information from over 100 Federal Agencies and Statistical profiles of States, counties, cities, Congressional Districts, and Federal judicial districts. It also provides access to selected online agency databases and Federal Statistical policies.
