Media Collections
In addition to the collections listed below, many other collections
at the University of Maryland include audio-visual materials. In
particular, the University
Archives' collections include numerous films, video, and audio
tape of sporting and other university events. Please check with
the curators of the collections to determine
the variety of formats individual collections may contain.
- Films@UM:
This collection includes digital videos drawn from various sources covering subjects in the arts and humanities. Included are documentaries, performances, interviews, and feature films.
- International
Piano Archives at Maryland: The IPAM Collection includes
96% of all commercial piano recordings ever issued, with taped
copies of most of the remainder. Formats include: 8,500 78 rpm
shellac records, 26,000 vinyl long-play records, and 11,000 compact
discs. The collection also includes 2,400 reel-to-reel tapes,
many of which are unique recordings of live concerts and radio
broadcasts and 4,000 reproducing piano rolls, including master
rolls of Josef Hofmann, Ignace Jan Paderewski, and Ignaz Friedman.
- The Library of American
Broadcasting: The Library's audio holdings are comprised
of a diverse collection of oral histories, interviews, speeches,
programming, commercials, news, and other special events. Housed
at the Library are thousands of recordings in a variety of formats,
from early radio transcription discs to CDs of award-winning radio
commercials. The Library's film and video holdings are small,
focusing primarily on promotional materials and samples of network
programming.
- National Public Broadcasting
Archives: Besides the textual records of public broadcasting's
major institutions, NPBA also collects and maintains a selected
audio and video program record of public broadcasting's national
production and support centers (NAEB, NPR, CPB/Annenberg) and
of local stations WETA, WAMU-FM, and Maryland Public Television
(MPT). Oral history tapes and transcripts from the NPR Oral History
Project, those conducted by Jim Robertson and the ongoing series
produced by NPBA staff, are also available.
- Nonprint
Media Services: Nonprint acquires materials from a variety
of sources including public television programs, documentaries,
and independent and world cinema. Some of the popular series are:
Eyes on the Prize, the complete BBC Shakespeare Plays,
the JVC/Smithsonian Video Anthology of World Music and Dance,
The Library of African Cinema, and the PBS VIDEOdatabase
of American History and Culture.
