Planning a Visit
Because of the uniqueness, fragility, and value of special collections materials most repositories place restrictions on the use and handling of their collections. Research in special collections often takes patience and advance planning.
- Research from home: Consult an online catalog or finding aids for basic information about collections. Do not, however, assume that something does not exist just because you cannot find an online description for it.
- Make Contact: Contact the repository in advance to obtain information about the collection(s) you wish to use, and to verify hours, use policies, and restrictions.
-
Registration: Be prepared to register and present photo identification when you arrive at a repository for the first time.
-
Make Time: Be aware that special collections materials do not circulate and you may not be able to make photocopies. Give yourself plenty of time to complete your research on site.
