Research & Writing Workshop for Graduate Students
The Graduate School and the University Libraries will jointly present a research and writing workshop for graduate students enrolled in the A. James Clark School of Engineering.
When and where?
The Research & Writing Workshops for international graduate students in the School of Enginering (scheduled on March 27 and 28) are now full! Why go?
This workshop is oriented towards any graduate student working on any research-related writing project (be it a thesis or dissertation, an article, a master's capstone scholarly paper, or a course paper).
Who should go?
This pilot workshop is geared towards language learners, particularly international graduate students, but any graduate student enrolled in the A. James Clark School of Engineering may attend.
What you will get out of the workshop:
- Personalized, one-on-one and small group instruction
- An established relationship with subject librarians
- Discipline-specific search strategies, databases, and search terms
- Peer-reviewed, scholarly research (and other research as appropriate) with which you can position your own experimental research
- Practice in citation and accurate paraphrasing
- Drafted introductory and literature review paragraphs for the larger writing project
- Instruction in structure as well as sentence-level problems
- Snacks/beverages
What you will need to do:
- Commit to attending the full workshop (Two hours in the morning and two in the afternoon)
- Provide Heather Blain Vorhies (hblain@umd.edu), Post-Doctoral Fellow, Office of Writing Initiatives, The Graduate School, with writing samples (your own and from your discipline) if requested.
