Tigran Hamasyan’s modern take on Armenian poetry and folk music shines through in his first solo recording, released in 2011. Eschewing the typical sounds of jazz piano in favor of a dreamlike and lilting atmosphere, these compositions weave in and out of traditional Armenian melodies and simple lullaby tunes with astounding dexterity. Hamasyan’s skill is showcased as he shifts between energetic dances and introspective ballads, and this recording provides an opportunity for listeners to glimpse the emotional core that drives this young pianist.

This triple-CD release is a must-hear for any jazz fan. Including three albums originally released in 2006, 2007, and 2008 respectively, this set combines the early recordings of a rising star. Hamasyan juxtaposes the sounds and rhythms of jazz reminiscent of Chick Corea with the timbres of his Armenian homeland. His exploration of this balance is a fresh approach to jazz in the early twenty-first century.
