HathiTrust emergency temporary access service ends August 3
When physical access to the UMD Libraries’ general print collection was affected during the COVID-19 crisis, the Libraries used the HathiTrust’s Emergency Temporary Access Service (ETAS) to provide digital access to over 900,000 print titles held by the Libraries. The digital versions of these works were used heavily by UMD faculty, staff, and students for online teaching, learning, and research over the past academic year.
When physical access to the Libraries’ print collection resumes on August 2, the copyright-related conditions for the fair use of these digital copies will end, as will our use of the ETAS. In alignment with the University’s progression to Phase 3 of expanded in-person activities, all UMD affiliates will regain physical access to the Libraries’ print collection in the usual ways, beginning on August 3.
UMD affiliates will still be able to search for and find bibliographic citations for items in the HathiTrust Digital Library, but full-text access to in-copyright print titles will no longer be available online. HathiTrust titles in the public domain or available through Creative Commons licensing will continue to be available online. These titles are marked “Full view” in the online catalog at https://www.hathitrust.org. Because University of Maryland is a HathiTrust member, you may log into HathiTrust using your institutional login and password to download full PDFs of these items.
For questions about our membership in HathiTrust or the discontinuation of ETAS, please contact Daniel Mack, Associate Dean of Libraries, at email@example.com. For assistance with finding and accessing materials, please reach out to your subject specialist librarian.
