Pop-up library provides deeper insight into STAMP gallery exhibit

This spring, explore themes of speculative futures, queerness, gender and survival in conversation with our current world with “alternative universe: visualizing queer futurisms,” an exhibit in the STAMP Gallery curated by Marjorie Antonio and it’s accompanying Pop-Up Library curated by the Art Library.

On view through April 6, the free exhibition features artwork by Camila Tapia-Guilliams and micha cárdenas and asks: What are the responses to the current state of our universe, our Earth, our world as queer/queered people? And how do we create and build alternate universes to survive?

The variety of mediums and focuses, from augmented reality artwork, game design and trans of color theory, to mixed-media and cooperative and anti-capitalist work, allows visitors to use the media and available resources to facilitate dialogue while placing emphasis on the practice of contemporary art.

“‘alternate universe’ has cárdenas’ and Tapia-Guilliams’ words embedded in every corner. It’s a space for students and community members alike to engage with queer dreams of the future,” said Antonio. “It holds the potentiality of queer joy at its core.”

The Pop-Up Library was created in partnership with the STAMP Gallery and the Art Library to make art literature readily accessible for viewers and provide access to resources that enhance the art exhibit. The purpose of the pop-up library is to make art literature easier to access, meeting visitors' instant information needs.

In conjunction with the exhibit, the Stamp Gallery will host a workshop on mixed media and cooperative arts communities with Tapia-Guilliams and a virtual artist talk by cárdenas.
